I recently replaced the cone on my National mandolin with the one they make with the pickup system. It involved taking the old one off after destringing and detaching the tailpiece. I thought that café members might be curious to see inside this great wee powerhouse instrument. The pickup is tremendous, sounds clean and powerful through a good amp.

And does anyone know how to remove the guard in the centre? The 4 locating bits are into welded nuts but I couldn't work out what you turned them with ....

Hi Kevin... the four little screws remove from the top with a (from memory, but I can check if you like) 1.3mm Allen key (I've done it a few times without problems on mine). This also makes set-up work very much easier.

It would be good to hear of your experience with the hotplate. I might consider getting one sometime if live gigs continue.

Thanks Richard, that's good to know - I'll go and get one now! The hotplates ben amazing so far, but I need to gig it more to get used to it. We put it through a Fender Twin Matheu Watson has and it was brilliant, clean and pure, warm and powerful. Jimmy Page eat yer heart out!

My friend and Cafe member Bert Deivert (http://www.deivert.com/blues/Bert_Deivert_-_Blues_Mandolin.html) uses the hotplate on his RM-1 for gigging and recording, and loves it.

The hotplate sounds great, balanced and tonally fine. Very pleased, National folks.

I cannot imagine. My RM-1 is so loud now that I can't play it in small rooms. It will peel paint, boil water, certainly makes the jammer opposite me wince.

Electrified I think I have to warn NOAA and US Geophysical. :disbelief: :mandosmiley:

I played one of these the other day. It was beautiful and sounded amazing. Really spectacular. I've played reso mandolins before, but these are really something special.
