You may have been taught Solfege in school. It's a complex approach of names and hand signals for learning scales and intervals and most helpful in understanding pitch relationships. There is a simpler approach that just uses numbers. It's one that might be of use to you, and it's explained visually on a great video from Pete Martin's video channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/xt981).
