A lot of people may think I'm crazy, but I sold my newly purchased and much beloved Breedlove OF to buy this Kentucky KM 950 from the Mandolin Store. I really liked the Breedlove with the exception of its volume and tone while "chopping". I thought it would be "the one", but my current playing is Bluegrass Jams and I wanted the Ky. I wanted to sell the Breedlove while it was still near mint to make another player happy.

I bucked convention, and although the Breedlove is a "cooler" instrument, made in America, etc. I went with what I wanted, and bought the Kentucky. It was a long road, but I finally made it "home".

It arrived 48 hours ago. I stared at the closed box for the prerequisite 24 hours, and then opened it up just in time to play in my little jam group class last night. Immediately knew I made the right choice. I prefer the 1 1/8" nut it has. The fretboard feels great, and I love the shape of the neck. It felt right. Reaching the little finger out feels like less of a stretch, and the chops are the tone I was looking for.

Now I just need to have someone install a strap button...I guess I'll try my local shop, Steilberg. They've always been helpful.

One day I would like to purchase a Breedlove again for more modern sounds and even Bach/classical, but for now, I'm glad I found "my" mandolin. :mandosmiley:

Congrats...you made a good move IMO.

I would not add the strap button if I were you. The loop under the fretboard extension should be fine, and looks cool too.

A great choice in a new mandolin and from the best shop around. Enjoy!

Congrats! I love my KM950. I tied a bootlace under the fingerboard extension and attached the strap to that. Works great.

Not crazy, the Breedlove mandolins I've played haven't impressed me but the KM900 series have for the money. I will say the Breedlove Revival DM guitar I played recently did impress me and sounded and responded better than the Martins that surrounded it in the store including a D18V.

Isn't the KM 950 the one with a wider, radiused fretboard (http://www.mandolincafe.com/news/publish/mandolins_001560.shtml)?

But at TMS it clearly states 1 1/8 inch.... (see 3rd from the bottom (http://www.themandolinstore.com/scripts/prodList.asp?brand=9)).

I think the 950 might be the best value for money mandolin in the shops nowadays. Where I live, there's no chance of seeing one, but everything I read about them intrigues me.

I go against the flow of perceived wisdom regarding strap buttons. I'd get one fitted. It's SO much neater a solution, far nicer than a bit of rope or leather straddling the top of the instrument, even if it is tucked under the fretboard.

I haven't measured mine, but it doesn't feel like a "Wide" fretboard. Perhaps the radius vs. flat gives the illusion of a wider fretboard?

There was a lot of confusion surrounding the nut and I researched it a lot... The nut is now stated to be 1 1/8" on the Saga page here, http://www.sagamusic.com/products/product-details.aspx?item=KM-950 , as well as on the sellers site now... It feels a little wider though than my other mando which has a 1 1/8" nut but a flat fretboard. It plays like a dream.

Are the KM950 and KM900 x braced or do they have tone bars?

NOT crazy! Smart move, love it, play it, keep it forever. You now have a "Go To" mandolin for life. I love my KM-1500 and I would love to have the 950 as a companion!
