View Full Version : Show off your Blackface A's

Feb-19-2005, 3:18pm
Well, I'm gonna do it. Getting an A-2 from Don Paine at Pomeroy. I like the look of some that I've seen, and if any have some photos of their blackfaces, I'd like to see 'em. I'm sure that others would, too.

Goodnight, that's goreous. I'm trying to decide how I want the soundhole bound, yours looks really nice, what kind of binding is on the body, looks abalone.

Feb-19-2005, 7:33pm
just black/white/black...top and sides......mop blocks on the board though, and then carried over to the soundhole design.

So years ago Hotclub shows up late at night in the campground at Telluride, I run and get a paper grocery bag and a pencil, and by the dim light of a minimag I trace the coolest new mando body shape Ive ever seen. Several years later, this nugget tribute exits the shop:

Feb-22-2005, 3:31pm
I am smitten!!! Very nice Bill!

Feb-22-2005, 6:26pm
Oh, my. I'm thankful to you all.

Feb-23-2005, 12:05pm
Back when Elderly Instruments was handling Old Wave I asked them for a photo of one of Bill's blackface C# two-pointers and still keep it pinned to my office wall. The design seems modern, yet timeless.

Mar-12-2005, 5:18pm
I've been watching this topic as I finish a new blackface, and finally here it is. #It is a mandola, 16.5" scale length, first one I have made.

Mar-12-2005, 5:23pm
Here is the back of the mandola. #This one is going to a VERY good home (Massimo Gatti). The back and neck is Tasmanian Myrtle. The back is one piece of Myrtle. Bindings are Ebony.

As I am considering a blackface with tortise binding. the drift wood #7 is appealing.

Can you post a close up of the binding in relation to the top and side?

Mar-15-2005, 11:38am
Hey Peter, gorgeous mandola up there! It will form a good pair alongside Massimo's blackface A5 that I posted above. He must really really like it!

Mar-15-2005, 11:47am
Well, here goes.

She's not quite blackfaced yet, but Chris Baird (Arches Mandolins) is spraying her top today... She'll be black later. Express tan!

I can't wait to have her!

I'm out of town and away from my baby till sunday. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif As soon as I get back I'll try to get you a few pictures of #7 up close so you can get a better look at the tortise. I love the effect of the tortise with the black top; kind of non-traditional but cool.

Mar-16-2005, 2:14pm
Thanks for that. I am looking forward to it. I did get a few shots from Andrew. I would still love to get some more of the sides and finger board binding also.

Mar-16-2005, 4:47pm
Do you guys really want me to take a photo of my black-face Hondo A model? I think not!

Mar-19-2005, 7:30pm
She is black now, and I'm in love. http://www.grandmainger.com/avatars/wub.gif

Mar-19-2005, 7:36pm
Wow! That's geeeorgeous.

Mar-19-2005, 7:39pm
I know! I love it !!!

It's a flattop actually. Difficult to tell because of the depth of the black http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Binding is herringbone, curly maple back and sides.

1 week to finish, many more days to ship to London and go through customs http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Mar-19-2005, 11:31pm
And then there's the VAT......poor guy. Nice lookin' mando, bet it's gonna sound just like it looks.

Mar-21-2005, 2:11pm
Peter... beautiful mandola... I love the birdseye guard in contrast to the black face, as well as the ebony binding on the myrtlewood body.
