Vintage 60’S Fender Artist Banjo - Super Clean

Photo for Ad 211035

For Sale: Excellent+ late 60's Vintage California Fender Artist. Very few make it this far in this condition. Perfect shape flange (many are warped or cracked), frets are like new, beautiful finish, chrome is excellent, rim is spotless. This is an early one with the round thumbscrews and incredibly fast playing neck. Hasn't even had spikes installed. Non-original case.

The quintessential 60’s - 70’s banjo. Same banjo Bill Emerson played on “Matterhorn”, "Fox on the Run" and other famous Country Gentleman recordings. These things really pop and have a tremendous 4th string. Very underrated banjos.

If you're looking for a nice collectible piece of 60's banjo nostalgia and a great sounding banjo to boot look no further. You will not be dissappointed. Will also consider trades including later model Imperial banjos by Ty Piper or any Stelling. $1695 + Shipping or Free Local Pickup

Mastertone Gold Tone Orange Blossom Banjo Arch Top Ob-250At

Photo for Ad 211016

This Gold Tone Banjo is $1,699.99 with free shipping!

Another great Orange Blossom pro-grade banjo, this one features a superb bell brass forty-hole arch-top (or raised-head) tone ring, like the ones in the G-word banjos made from the late 1920s into the 1930s (instead of the flat head ring). This tone ring produces a sharper, more incisive tone that's useful for cutting through the random noise being produced by the other members of your band. Seriously, though, if you love the old Stanley Brothers recordings and Dr. Ralph's signature tone, this is the banjo for you. All other features are as per the OB-250.

Paramount Style A Tenor Banjo (1925)

Photo for Ad 211008

$1,250.00 + shipping

Paramount Style A Model Tenor Banjo (1925), made in New York City, serial # 5714, natural varnish finish, laminated maple rim, laminated maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

Paramount's Style A was the plainest-grade instrument in the company's professional standard "letter series" line retailing originally at $130.00; in the 1920's this was still a fancy and expensive instrument. Along with Vega's Vegaphone models William Lange's Paramount line were the most popular of all the orchestra banjos of the 1920's and basically set the pattern for the "modern" resonator banjo. These banjos were the lynchpin of the rhythm section of every jazz and dance band in the country, as well as a featured soloist's instrument.

This Style A is fairly well-worn but typical of mid-1920's Paramounts, not as heavily decorated but with all the same construction details of the high grade instruments. The neck and rim are of laminated all-maple construction with rosewood-bound edges. The rosewood fingerboard has notched diamond pearl inlay, there is a marquetry strip under the fingerboard and a particularly fancy and attractive peghead design with elaborate engraved pearl inlay.

The tailpiece is the standard 1920s Paramount adjustable tension style, marked as "improved Paramount Pat. Pend'g" on the hinged cover. The armrest is the earlier style bent flat wire piece. The original Page tuners are long gone, a very common situation as the cast housings were prone to cracking even when new. This Style A is a medium-level tenor by 1920's standards but retains all the quality and sound of the best Paramounts. This is a played-in but fine nearly 100 year old banjo, ready for the next century.

Overall length is 33 1/2 in. (85.1 cm.), 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm.) diameter head, and 3 1/4 in. (8.3 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 in. (584 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.).

This banjo is fairly well worn but a solid player, with changed tuners and fitted out with a modern plastic head but otherwise largely original. The fragile Page cast-housing tuning pegs are long gone; the banjo looks to have gone through several tuner experiments long ago. It is fitted with a set of late-20s Grover two-tabbed pegs, functional and correct to the period at least. Multiple holes and marks in the back of the peghead attest to other different fittings early on. Thankfully the beautiful headstock face was relatively undisturbed.

There is some fairly heavy finish wear, most notably to the lower/bottom side and back of the resonator. The back of the neck only has had a clear lacquer overspray, likely long ago with some older wear visible beneath. Some of the ambered lacquer has flaked off the heavily inlaid headstock facing. Position dots in paint have been amateurishly added to the side of the fingerboard; these could be removed if desired but are actually fairly functional, for the less than expert player at least.

Most of the plating is in surprisingly good shape; The tailpiece cover has some heavy loss and some hooks show corrosion mostly along the bottom side. The hoop is a bit chewed into on its top surface from multiple re-headings. The hooks and nuts are original and complete; the outer head on one of the mounting bolts for the armrest is sheared off but it does not affect the piece itself at all. The banjo was refretted some time ago with somewhat larger wire than the (very thin) original and this is a fine playing and sounding example of a classic era Paramount from the mid-1920s, one of the standard orchestra tenor banjos of that or any era. It includes a worn but functional original HSC. Overall Very Good + Condition.

Vega Little Wonder Special Tenor Banjo (1931)

Photo for Ad 210967

$1,100.00 + shipping
Contact us for availability and pricing.

Vega Little Wonder Special Model Tenor Banjo (1931), made in Boston, Mass., serial # 96029, shaded maple finish, laminated maple neck, rim and resonator; ebonized fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

The Little Wonder Special was Vega's highest grade budget tenor of the late 1920s, or lowest grade pro model depending on how you look at it! The model boasts a combination of the pro-grade Vegaphone style resonator and flange with the simple rim and tone ring construction of the basic Little Wonder. Although priced in 1930 at $75 as a good student's value, this model feels and plays like the higher grade Vegas, if with a bit less volume and "ring" due to the plain capped tone ring. The materials are top grade; the neck is maple with an ebonized fingerboard, the rim and resonator laminated maple.

This example is fitted with the multiple flange pieces originally produced for the upscale Vegaphones, but here being used up as that line had by this point been altered to a solid flange design. That gives this banjo a fancier look than many. It has simple geared Grover tuners with the only ornament of note being the engraved pearl Vega star in the headstock. "A beauty in appearance, a wonder for tone and the highest quality for the price" read Vega's catalog description, and in this case they are not really gilding the lily. This one shows a decent amount of surface wear and tear but still plays and sounds very well.

Overall length is 33 1/4 in. (84.5 cm.), 11 in. (27.9 cm.) diameter head, and 3 in. (7.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 in. (584 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.).

This banjo shows a decent amount of wear overall but remains an excellent value in a quality period tenor banjo. The original finish on the neck has quite a bit of flaking, likely more from exposure to moisture long ago than actual play wear. The rim and resonator are less affected but do have some checking, dings, dents and scratches visible. For the most part except for the flaking on the neck and headstock the banjo remains quite attractive.

The original hardware and plating show some average wear; the tailpiece is a later replacement but the rest remains original. The original frets have some wear in the lower positions but not enough to affect playability. The banjo is set up with an old, period (possibly original) skin head; it is a bit dirty but sounds great; you can't get skins of this quality anymore. This is a very good learner's or just general knock-around tenor banjo with a real professional feel. Very Good + Condition.

Kevin Enoch's entry-level Tradesman line continues to produce some of the best bang-for-your-buck clawhammer banjos currently in production - any time a used one wanders through our store, we leap at the opportunity to sell it. This fretless Tradesman from 2021 instantly won over the banjo players on our staff with its round, authentically old-time tone that just can't be had from a five-string with more modern amenities. Set up with nylon strings for impressive warmth and a responsive low end despite a minimal, multi-ply mahogany pot, this instrument is sure to delight frailers of all types who find themselves looking for a more genuine sound when they sit down to play early American music (or whatever else strikes their fancy).

This instrument is essentially indistinguishable from a new one in terms of playing wear and set up, and accordingly, we consider it to be in mint condition. Included in the price is the original Enoch Banjos gig bag.

2017 Prucha Fall-In-Love Custom Maple

Photo for Ad 210943

$5,500.00

Exc+ condition • SN: 1134
1-7/32″ Nut • Radiused F.B.
Glass Beaded Matte Hardware
Lots of tasteful extras

This Maple custom “Fall in Love” banjo, built by Jaroslav Prucha in 2017, is a great example of Mr Prucha’s artful craftsmanship. This banjo is built using very high grade Maple and Gabon Ebony fingerboard. There are several good options that were added to this banjo. I’ll list those here and describe them in more detail as we go along.
Abalone inlays instead of Mother of Pearl; Abalone truss-rod cover; Compound radiused fingerboard; Colorful wood purflings along the fingerboard and around the resonator; Two concentric circles of wooden purflings in resonator back; One-pc Maple veneer resonator back; Matte Nickel Hardware…

This Maple banjo is beautiful with the golden-amber sunburst finish really showing off the strong Maple figure of the neck and the resonator. The neck has an Ebony peghead veneer with JPrucha logo abalone inlay and a further complement of abalone floral inlays above the logo, out by the tuner posts and in the center of the peghead. Nickel H&K two-band main tuners and Gotoh 5th, all with matching ivoroid buttons. Bone nut. Compound radius frets. R.R. spikes installed at 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th, for capo’ing for A, Bb, B and C.
Ivoroid multiple outer bindings along sides of neck with colorful wood marquetry purflings under the bindings. Dark position marks in the ivoroid binding on player’s side of the neck. The 19th fret inlay block reads, “Fall in Love”.

The Pot starts out with a 3-ply Maple rim, 1-pc pot metal flange, and Prucha/Ptacek 20-hole pre-war style Flat Head ball bronze tone ring. The rim is tastefully stained to match the neck and resonator finish. Signed label inside the rim. Highly figured Maple resonator side walls and back. The top and back edges of the resonator has multiple ivoroid binding, with the wood purflings along the sides and also seen as two concentric circles around the back. All hardware is nickel plated, but with glass-beading making matte finish on lots of the parts.

What a great sounding banjo! Set up is easy with Mr Prucha’s banjos. The truss-rods work so smoothly its hard to believe. There is a wide range of tone that can be dialed-in. You can have a professional sound with the head a little bit relaxed or with the head tighter. These banjos play as nice as they sound.

Comes all set-up and with a good original hard case.

S. S. Stewart Special Thoroughbred 5 String Banjo (1896)

Photo for Ad 210893

$2,950.00 + shipping

S. S. Stewart Special Thoroughbred Model 5 String Banjo (1896), made in Philadelphia, PA, serial # 16771, natural varnish finish, spunover rim, cherrywood neck with ebony fingerboard, black chipboard case.

This instrument is an S.S. Stewart "Special Thoroughbred" banjo, made around 1896 when the Philadelphia company was, by their own account at least, the world's greatest banjo maker. This was a fairly unique model built with higher grade materials but devoid of the fancy fingerboard inlay used by most makers in this era. It was endorsed in 1896 by the virtuoso Alfred A. Farland, who was so full of ideas about how the banjo should be made he would shortly launch his own signature instrument line. He wanted a clean playing surface for his elaborate technique, and found the usual profusion of pearl in the better instruments to be an impediment. The "Special Thoroughbred" therefore has only tiny diamond inlay, leaving mostly unbroken ebony for the fingers to dance on.

The other features are fairly high end. This example is built around a 10 5/8" spunover 28 bracket rim with a 26 1/2" scale neck. There is a lovely dense moon-and-stars pearl inlay pattern on the headstock, and the heel is carved in a typical Stewart floral motif. The dowel stick carries an inlayed celluloid "S.S. Stewart, Phil'a PA" logo tag alongside an impressed "SSS" headstock-shaped logo. An ivoroid "Special Thoroughbred" tag is pinned inside the lower rim. The tailpiece is the original "Common Sense" style with the center "walrus ivory" (per Stewart) decorative rosette still intact. The tuners are standard period friction pegs with ivoroid buttons. Stewart's patented turnbuckle neck brace is intact and working; this was one of the earliest such systems.

This model listed at $40 in 1896, which was a high/midline price for Stewart but a considerable sum of money even in the Gilded Age. Stewart was never at a loss promoting his wares; It was described as "made of the choicest selected material, and possesses the quality of musical tone so desirable in a concert banjo". He added it was "made for BANJO PLAYERS exclusively and not novices". For a time the Thoroughbred models were not sold in music stores, but had to be special ordered directly from Stewart's Philadelphia factory.

The banjo shows some wear and tear but remains a nicely original survivor of the first golden era of the 5-string banjo, a true playable antique and a lovely example of S.S. Stewart's work.

Overall length is 35 1/4 in. (89.5 cm.), 10 3/4 in. (27.3 cm.) diameter head, and 2 3/4 in. (7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 26 1/2 in. (673 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.).

This banjo remains in nicely original condition showing wear typical for its age, now approaching 130 years old! The finish on the wood is relatively clean overall, with minor dings and a couple of wear spots to the wood lower down on the neck. There is one feelable capo ding behind the third fret, and a few lighter scrapes. The fingerboard and frets show very little wear.

There is some loss and corrosion to the outer plated rim surface, most notable below the neck where some plating is gone down to the metal. The hook and nut set is all period and almost completely original with a couple of just slightly mismatched nuts; there is general plating loss but less corrosion than many.

All other hardware is original, including the tailpiece, neck brace and friction tuners. This banjo, like all early Stewarts, was designed in an era when only gut strings were used on banjos. It is set up with a NylGut classical set and a old funky looking but very solid calfskin head. We would NOT recommend steel strings on this instrument; the cherry neck is quite straight fiord one of these but not designed for steel string tension. Many old Stewart banjos have been effectively ruined in this way over the last 100 years. Taken as it is, this is a lovely period piece and a fine playing and sounding banjo within its 19th century intentions. Overall Excellent - Condition.

2012 Huber Banjos Sammy Shelor Truetone 5-String Resonator

Photo for Ad 210842

3,999.00

Steve Huber's well-researched take on Sammy Shelor's late '30s Gibson flathead, which had features of both the RB-3 and the RB-75. This mahogany model has been played, and has two "railroad spikes" under the fifth string. There's minor fret wear, a few small nicks to the back of the neck and to the lower edge of the resonator. Minor tarnish to the nickel parts, but a solid "True Tone" Huber bluegrass banjo that delivers that classic Mastertone mahogany flathead sound. Comes with the original case.

In recent years an important part of our growth has been in instruments by very small companies and individual makers, as we continue to keep one foot, or at least several toes, outside the mainstream music industry.

1926 Bruno Royal Artist Style A Tenor Banjo

Photo for Ad 210833

$1,000.00 + shipping

Bruno Royal Artist Style A Model Tenor Banjo, made by Wm. Lange (1926), made in New York City, natural varnish finish, laminated maple neck, resonator and rim, ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

Is a Paramount by any other name still a Paramount? In this case pretty much yes, as this tenor banjo made by William Lange for Bruno & Sons in New York is every bit as grand as its full-line equivalent. Lange had a longstanding business relationship with New York jobber Bruno, who in the 1910s were the exclusive distributors of his high-end Orpheum line. The 1926 Bruno catalog introduced a 3-model "house" line of fully professional banjos branded "Royal Artist", of which this Style A was the most basic.

This banjo is a close cousin to Paramount's Style A, the plainest banjo in the company's professional line. This Bruno retailed originally at $125.00;, $5 less than its Paramount sibling. In the 1920's this was still a fancy and expensive instrument, aimed at pro players. The Paramount line were about the most popular orchestra banjos of the 1920s, the lynchpin of the rhythm section of every jazz and dance band in the country as well as a featured soloist's instrument.

This Royal Artist Style A has many similar features to the mid-1920's Paramount A, but some interesting differences as well. The neck, resonator and rim are of laminated all-maple construction with some beautiful burl figure on the back. The rim and elevated tone ring are Paramount style, but the resonator is a bit deeper with unbound edges but an inlaid strip along the side. The stamped metal flange is the only part that looks cheaper; it is integral with the rim sheath and has fancier star-shaped holes. The resonator is retained by two small screw-on nuts instead of the hooks used on Paramounts.

The neck is very similar, made of 5-piece laminated maple with a bound thin ebony fingerboard sporting notched diamond pearl inlay. There is a marquetry strip laid under the fingerboard and a particularly fancy and attractive peghead design with elaborate engraved pearl inlay engraved "Royal Artist" "Bruno NY' and "A"..

The tailpiece and tuners depart from in-house Paramount practice; they are Grover parts may have been sourced by Bruno separately. Tuners are the early Grover "spike" style geared units and the tailpiece is the standard long Presto used by many makers. The curved armrest is also a more generic piece. As the original Page tuners used exclusively by Paramount were prone to cracking housings even when new, Bruno got the better end of this deal!

This Royal Artist Style A is a medium-level tenor by 1920's standards but neat and attractive. It maintains the quality and sound of a Paramount, not as heavily decorated as some but with the same construction as the high grade styles. It is a much rarer instrument, as this line was only in production fairly briefly in the mid-late 1920s. This is a fine and lovely nearly 100 year old banjo, not too heavily used and ready for the next century.

Overall length is 33 3/4 in. (85.7 cm.), 11 in. (27.9 cm.) diameter head, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 in. (584 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/8 in. (29 mm.).

This nearly 100 year old banjo shows some general wear overall but remains original and a fine player. The original thin varnish finish is largely intact on the neck and rim; it appears the resonator may have been refinished or overfinished long ago or it could be sloppier than usual work from Lange's crew on this off-brand piece! A small chip of binding is mossing on the treble side of the fingerboard just above the body.

All hardware is original, the thin metal flange has some dents and warping to the outer edge but nothing that affects function. The original slim frets have only very light wear. The banjo is set up with an older (probably 1960s) Weather King plastic head and has a very powerful sound, fully equivalent to its Paramount siblings. It resides in the original HSC, somewhat battered externally but still fully functional. Excellent - Condition.
