The A-4 was Gibson’s top of the line A style, oval-hole model in the ‘teens golden era of mandolins. This 1916 model (SN 26996) has had a rough life prior to my acquiring it. It’s definitely a player with a sweet voice, great action, and is stable with none of the top sinkage or back shrinkage often seen in such models of this vintage. However, it’s refinish is full of cracks and has some chipping (in the finish, not the wood), and I had to have the previously-repaired broken peg head re-repaired (by the well-respected mando luthier Glen Dean Cecil of near Charleston, WV). It’s fully stable now.
This mandolin has a spruce top, mahogany neck, and what I believe is birch back and sides; with the original Handel inlaid tuners which work well; with apparently original pick guard in excellent condition, and with a modern, adjustable bridge. It will come with a modern contoured HSC with plush lining, in excellent condition. Asking $1050 to include shipping within the lower 48.
