1930 Maurer Model 593

Some of the most outstanding guitars of the early 20th century were not made by Martin or Gibson, but by the Larson Bros. of Chicago. In 1900, the Larson Bros. bought the rights to the name Maurer from its founder, Robert Maurer. They built exceptionally beautiful instruments, including this extremely rare presentation grade model 593, the Maurer top-of-the line. There are very few Model 593s in existence and it is exactly like the one played on the Tone Poems CD by the legendary guitarist, Tony Rice.

The body size is between a parlor and an OM. The peg head features an elaborate abalone floral pattern bound in ivoroid. The piece de resistance is the fret board inlaid in a combination of mother of pearl and abalone shell in the pattern most often referred to as the "Tree of Life", perhaps the most highly decorative and sought after stringed instrument adornment. The top of the guitar is constructed of tight grained spruce, bound in ivoroid with semi-herringbone purfling sitting astride a border of abalone shell. This theme is carried over in the rosette, and also around the fingerboard extension. The ebony bridge is also inlaid with an engraved mother of pearl star on each wing. The triple bound back has a multi-colored inlaid wood back strip which sets off the book matched Brazilian rosewood in a regal manner. Even the side body edges are triple bound! The sides are also Brazilian rosewood and the neck is mahogany with a decorative inlaid maple and rosewood strip.

This guitar is in excellent playing condition, with some pick wear on the top near the bridge and one professionally repaired crack on the treble side. The bridge has been shaved and the saddle is low but it plays easily and intonates perfectly. The sound is woody and distinctive.
