1939 Gibson A-50 "Big Body" Mandolin

Photo for Ad 139311

Here’s one of those rare late ‘30s Gibson mandolins with the extra-wide body that is often referred to as the “Big Bell” version. The body is a full  11” wide with a 14.5” scale and enlarged f  holes as well. The result is an extra amount of volume and projection, an instrument that can be easily heard even in a large ensemble.

The bound fret board features fancy "Nick Lucas" inlays. The profile is slim, and this particular instrument has been thinned at the junction of the neck and peg head with some crudely applied touch up finish. It’s hard to be sure exactly what happened there, but all appears to be stable and strong.
The instrument is in excellent playing condition with nice, comfortable action and aside from an almost dime-sized blemish in the finish on the bass side, and the addition of a pick-up jack at the tailpiece, the esthetic condition is very good. Take note of the exquisitely figured flame maple back & sides.

$1,150.00 with chipboard case.
