Gibson F-2 On Sale

Photo for Ad 118902

A wonderful offering, this is an original three-point black face Artist model featuring inlaid Handel tuners and an Orville label; the F-2 was next to the top of the line; this mandolin was made when the instrument was king in America; there were mandolin orchestras all around the country and someone with decent talent and a well paying job could buy an F-2. This particular mando has a rich, projecting tone that is better than most that we have played from this era. Symmetry is evident in the interaction of the multiple points and scrolls on the pickguard, fingerboard extension, peghead, and body shape; the build quality is exceptional. As is common with early Gibson mandolins, the neck-set is shallow and is setup with low action and a 1/2" bridge (stamped with a patent date of 4/1896). Original pickguard is present with "Patent Applied For" stamp on side. Finish scratching is evident throughout, bumps and dings present as well. One repaired crack is present on the top parallel to the G string from the rosette to the side (a small reinforcing cleat is present on back of top). Period GEIB case is present (slightly later than mandolin, as it would have originally come with a bottom-loading-leather-case.
