Newfoundland

This is the final piece of "The Brendan Voyage", composed by Shaun Davey for
Uilleann pipes and orchestra (Tara Music 3006). Pipes played by Liam O’Flynn.
The suite commemorates the Brendan Voyage, which was a 1970s trip from Ireland
to Newfoundland in a leather-skinned boat constructed using ca. 800 AD methods
to prove that Irish saint Brendan the Navigator could have "discovered" America.
This is the basic pipes melody. There are pipes ornamentation and orchestral
variations that don’t show up here. I added the final couple of bars to end it
instead of going into the orchestral stuff as it does on the album. A sound clip
of this available at the Tara web site is of the orchestral section, which
sounds somewhat different from the pipes solo.

The Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis, or Voyage of St Brendan, is an ~ninth
century manuscript that is sort of the Irish Odyssey; but much shorter, gentler
and G-rated (no women at all!); Brendan and his band of monks sail the seas for
years experiencing various wonders and finally finding paradise before sailing
home. The Navigatio described the construction of the boat, and medieval
cartographers made much of the various islands described in the text. The
modern trip by Tim Severin was described in his book The Brendan Voyage
(McGraw Hill 1978).
