MacPherson's Farewell - aka MacPherson's Rant or Lament.  The legend is that Jamie
McPherson was a Robin Hood type in Scotland who was captured and sentenced to hang for the
capital offense of being a half-Gypsy.  While in jail he wrote this song, then played it on
the gallows before his death.  Due to some dissatisfaction with the crowd (the problem
varies with version of the legend), he smashed his fiddle and threw it into the crowd before

McPherson's poem that accompanied the tune was updated by Robert Burns.  (I like the original
more).  This is from the fiddle playing of glass armonica player Dean Shostak on the CD
"Celtic Crystal."  I added the baritone harmony to play it as a mando duet in church on
Halloween - filling the need for a sweet melody with a ghastly story.  We left the
double-stops out when playing the harmony.
