Seattle, Wash. — Dusty Strings Acoustic Music Shop is proud to welcome Mike Marshall for an all-levels mandolin workshop on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., 3406 Fremont Av. N.
Workshop fee is $70. As a sell-out is expected, advance registration is strongly recommended.
Mike will start at the very beginning of basic mandolin playing techniques, from the fundamentals of holding the instrument, the right hand and the pick, to the intricacies of the left-hand positions.
He will share his philosophy of good tone production and the fundamentals of right-hand up and down stroke exercises for the development of clear and even articulation between all strings.
From there he will work with you on a series of exercises designed to deal with all possible combinations of left-hand finger work from his book The Great Book of Finger Busters.
Mike will then move to his concept of finding chords on the mandolin. Using his own system of triad inversions, he will show you how to "find" most chords on your own through this clear approach using the fundamentals of chord theory as applied to the mandolin's tuning.
During this part of the class he will share with you some basic strumming patterns used in bluegrass, swing and jazz, and Brazilian rhythmic styles.
For those in the class who wish to play for Mr. Marshall, he will open up the end of the session for individuals to play for him in a "one-on-one" master-class setting while others take in the details of his insights. You could play an original piece or something traditional for him. Your choice.
Come spend a day with Mike looking into to finer points of mandolin playing.
