Matt Flinner will teach a three-hour mandolin workshop on July 22, 2006 from noon - 3:00 p.m., Community United Church of Christ, 814 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607.

The hands-on session will cover mandolin technique, improvisation, theory and exercises for "getting to the next level." The workshop is open to all playing levels.

Flinner, now based in Nashville, has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. Starting out as a banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year.

He has released three albums on the Compass Records label (Latitude, Walking on the Moon, The View from Here) and has played and toured with artists such as Jerry Douglas, David Grier, Tony Furtado, Darol Anger, Todd Phillips, Stuart Duncan, among others.

Space is limited. Cost is $50 for non "Banjo in the Hollow" Bluegrass Association members (which includes a one-year association membership). Association members pay $40. Registration deadline is July 18, 2006.
