Tom Ellis is building mandolins again.
A name synonymous with mandolins in the late 1970s to early 1990s, he crafted high-end custom-made instruments that were played by many, but probably none more famous than Ricky Skaggs who recorded widely with his Ellis model for nearly twenty years.
While raising a family in the early 1990s, Ellis left mandolin building and launched Precision Pearl Inlay, an Austin, Texas based business utlilizing computer technology that supplies inlay to the guitar community.
Precision Pearl Inlay developed into a successful business venture with several employees, and one he intends to continue with his eldest daughter playing an integral role in the operation.
In 2004 he began designing systems with the intent of returning to building mandolins. In his new venture, Ellis will be joined by two talented luthiers in Nathan Arrison and Pava Knezevic.
Look for Ellis Mandolins to be commercially available in 2006.
