ArtistWorks and Mandolin Cafe Present Mike Marshall's Mandolin Mashup, a Live Online Workshop with Mike Marshall.

ArtistWorks and Mandolin Cafe Present Mike Marshall's Mandolin Mashup, a Live Online Workshop with Mike Marshall.

Napa, Calif. — ArtistWorks, the leading provider of interactive online music lessons, has teamed up with Mandolin Cafe to present a rare live online workshop to be held March 6 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time with world renowned mandolin player and ArtistWorks Academy of Bluegrass online teaching artist Mike Marshall.

Mike will talk about his history with the mandolin, play some tunes and demonstrate teaching techniques for everything from bluegrass to jazz and classical. Mandolin students and special guests will be on hand to ask questions and join in the fun and the general web public is invited to tune in and watch.

"The event is all set up in Google Plus and Google Hangouts," said Ian Alexander of ArtistWorks. "All people need to do is show up at any one of the three locations we provide below to view the live workshop. They don't have to sign in or log in or anything. It'll simply be there.

What: Mike Marshall's Mandolin Mashup - a live streaming event with Mike Marshall moderated by Mandolin Cafe Founder Scott Tichenor.
When: March 6 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

"It's not necessary to register for the live workshop, but viewers can sign up on our Google Plus page to receive reminders about the event," said Alexander.

To sign up for the event and receive an event reminder visit the ArtistWorks Google+ page for the event.

Marshall teamed up with ArtistWorks in 2011 to start the Online Mandolin School. In it, students learn from dozens of pre-recorded online video lessons, tabs and backing tracks. Whenever they want feedback, they can use ArtistWorks Video Exchange Feedback Platform to submit practice videos. Marshall responds with personalized videos detailing strengths and providing additional exercises to shore up weak points.

These Video Exchanges are paired together, combined with the lessons and made available for all students to see and learn from.

Mike will give out a special code during the event which will provide a discount for anyone signing up for his School of Mandolin.

"I constantly interact one-on-one online, helping the students at my school improve their playing," said Marshall. "I am looking forward to broadening that musical discussion to a wider audience and anyone interested in my School of Mandolin can get a taste of the experience through this live event."

I encourage everyone to sign up for the event reminders for this one.

This live educational event is pretty much just like watching a video on YouTube only I'll be moderating, Mike will be teaching and 6-8 students from his School will also participate in the workshop. Everyone else can watch the live stream. Pretty exciting use of technology I think. The event will be recorded for watching at later dates.

Sign up for event reminders here, although not required. Does appear you need to be a Google+ member though. No worry, just show up at one of the event locations (all web-based) indicated in the article.

It's free. No signing up (unless you just want to) or anything else.

All you have to do is show up on the Cafe home page on March 6 at the scheduled timed to watch. Be sure to pay attention to the time difference. 7:00 p.m. West coast is 8:00 p.m. Mountain, 9:00 p.m. Central, etc.

I would recommend the mandolin course to anyone willing to listen. I've been signed up for about 2 months and the lessons are top notch. I haven't had a video exchange yet but have been working through the lessons and Mike is a great teacher. I will almost surely renew when my membership is up. Very affordable and a great value overall.

Any idea how long this will be? 9:00 is a late start on the east coast and I'd like to see if I can make it.

It's one hour in length, plus, if you're on the East coast I'd say your start time is 10:00 p.m.

I've said here before but here goes again: Mike is the best. A fantastic teacher who can play, teach and explain ANY style of music. Don't be mislead by the "bluegrass" label. There are lessons and video exchanges on almost every thing you can imagine.

A free one hour lesson seems like a bargain ;)

This looks interesting but it is at 4.00 am in the morning in England. Can you say when the recording will be available for watching?

The ArtistWorks crew tells me these are pretty much ready and ready for playback as soon as they're over. I haven't actually experienced this yet but assume once it's archived it will be available from a link we can share or possibly we can even embed it on the Cafe or forum possibly. Either way, should be available for anyone in the UK, Europe and beyond shortly after the live event is over.

And now David Grisman is in as well. This is exciting. I hope this is the first of many such collaborations and online gatherings of mandolino giocatori.

Looking forward to this, although I probably won't be able to join in since my internet is by satellite and slow. One of the joys of country living. I hope to download it afterward when I can jump on some high speed bandwidth.

I have the video code set up to add to the home page in about 30 minutes. Did a live run-through about an hour ago. A picture of me has never appeared on the Cafe home page and now, damnit, they've tricked me into a recorded live video. Seriously, should be fun.
