Seattle Mandolin Orchestra - Coloratura

Seattle Mandolin Orchestra - Coloratura

Seattle, Wash. — The Seattle Mandolin Orchestra announces a new recording for 2012, Coloratura. The April 3 release will be available via digital download as well as on compact disc, and can be purchased at the orchestra's web site. It will be sold at concerts by the orchestra, including May 12 at Seattle's Green Lake United Methodist Church and May 26 at Northwest Folklife at the Seattle Center and online.

Recorded at Seattle's Vera Project studios, Coloratura features the orchestra under the direction of Joseph Pollard White, with soprano soloist Julie Finch. The disc finds the orchestra drawing from its classical and Italian repertoires. There are dance-oriented compositions from Johannes Brahms (Hungarian Dance No. 6), Reinhold Gliere (Russian Sailors' Dance) and J.S. Bach (Bourree from Cello Suite No. 3), as well as Slow Waltz, an original piece by White.

The orchestra and Ms. Finch are a fixture at Seattle's annual Festa Italiana, and Coloratura features eight selections drawn from our Festa performances, including popular favorites like O Sole Mio and Chitarra Romana, as well as the Renaissance art songs Alma del Core and Amarilli, Mia Bella, and the popular aria Lascia, Ch'io Pianga from G.F. Handel's opera Rinaldo.

"I'm pleased that this recording shows our commitment to reinterpreting classical repertoire," said White. "Julie's vocals really put it over the top. The combination of a mandolin orchestra with a first-class soprano soloist is unique and absolutely sublime."

A native of New York, Joseph Pollard White completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Washington, where he was a student of Robert Feist. He also holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Indiana University School of Music. Dr. White has taught at Northern Kentucky University, Christopher Newport University and Pacific Lutheran University. He has worked with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Seattle Chamber Players and Northwest Mahler Festival and served as Music Director of the Rainier Symphony and Seattle Civic Light Opera.

Julie Finch, coloratura soprano, has appeared as soloist with Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, the Bellevue Chamber Singers and Ballet Bellevue. She is a past winner of the Seattle Civic Opera Association competition, the Helen Crowe Snelling competition, the Mary Levine Career Grant Scholarship and the Karl Trump Award.

Founded in 1968, the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra is dedicated to revitalizing America's mandolin ensemble tradition. Featuring the entire mandolin family of instruments, including mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass, the group performs throughout the Seattle area. Its repertoire encompasses classical, folk and international selections. Mandolin players of all skill levels are welcome to join.
