Santa Cruz, Calif. — The Santa Cruz Baroque Festival presents Caterina Lichtenberg and Mike Marshall in concert at 7:30 p.m., March 10, 2012 at UCSC Music Center Recital Hall for the Baroque Festival's Season Concert II, Evolving Mandolins.

Evolving Mandolins brings two of the world's greatest mandolinists to Santa Cruz. Caterina Lichtenberg and Mike Marshall will showcase the evolution of the mandolin through musical time starting with its 16th century roots in Europe and extending to folk music traditions of the Americas.

A performer as adaptable and charismatic as her instrument, Caterina Lichtenberg has appeared worldwide as performing and workshop artist, showcasing the instrument's folk and classical music capabilities alike, as soloist and in various ensembles. Originally from Bulgaria, she now holds the only professorship of mandolin in Europe at the Cologne University of Music in Germany.

Well-known to the Santa Cruz mandolin community, Mike Marshall is one of the world's most accomplished and versatile string instrumentalists in America today. A master on mandolin, guitar, mandocello and violin, he has created some of the most adventurous instrumental music for over 35 years. His concert tours that have taken him around the globe.

The Baroque Festival enthusiastically welcomes back Caterina Lichtenberg, together with Mike Marshall — a collaboration of two virtuosos of different backgrounds that promises a dynamic and colorful journey through the world of mandolin.

About the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival

Under the direction of early keyboard specialist Linda Burman-Hall, the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival has been presenting regular concerts since 1974, bringing early music to Santa Cruz and other California audiences in hundreds of concerts. Baroque music opens the world of historic sound, and can lead both musician and audience on countless voyages of musical discovery. Experimenting with "new" ideas about "old" instruments and music, our Festival performers virtually travel through time.
