Andy Statman - Old Brooklyn

Andy Statman - Old Brooklyn

Brooklyn, N.Y. — Shefa Records is proud to announce the long awaited release of Andy Statman's Old Brooklyn, a two-disc set of original music and interpretations of songs that span the American musical landscape.

Appearing on the project with Andy is an all-star supporting case that includes Andy's own Andy Statman Trio members Jim Whitney & Larry Eagle, Béla Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, Paul Shaffer, Byron Berline, Lew Soloff, Jon Sholle, Bruce Molsky, Art Baron, Marty Rifkin, Bob Jones, Kristin Müeller and John Goodman.

"(A) beautiful and new experience. It has the heart of klezmer... but it's not klezmer. It has the spirit of border pushing jazz of the 60s, but it's not really jazz either. It's (music) interpreted not as a tradition to be preserved but as a spiritual path in as personal a manner as possible."
— The New York Times

The official release date of Old Brooklyn is October 25, 2011. Advance orders are currently available through amazon.com (link at end of article).

I'm happy to say that my photography graces the liner notes and press materials. At some point, I'll put up a photo collection from the recording sessions. As for the music, as Glass sez, "fasten yer seat belts..."

Really looking forward to this one! "East Flatbush Blues" makes it's way into my rotation often.

Yeah it will be interesting to hear the Kimble on a Statman CD....or maybe he's got the A2Z on there too?

This sounds like a major effort on Andy's part. It seems like he is trying to gather all the strands of his life and music.

I bought 'On Air' and do sometimes listen to it, but didn't really feel the need to also buy 'East Flatbush Blues' - good though it undoubtedly is.

However, I think this sounds irresistible!

There is no way I can avoid purchasing this.

Did you see who else is on it - Ricky Skaggs, Bela Fleck, Jon Sholle, even Paul Shaffer

Thank you, Andy! I'll have Old Brooklyn as soon as I have the cash to pay for it!! Keep 'em coming!
October 08, 2011 02:27 PM
So, what do you suppose John Goodman does??????
October 08, 2011 03:20 PM
He introduces the title track... milking "Old Brooklyn" for all it's worth!

It was released today, and I'm listening on Spotify now-- wow, that an interesting blend of sounds. This is going to take some repeat listening. I'm impressed.

Andy Statman has announced a New York City "record release" show at (le) Poisson Rouge on January 25 at 7:30 P.M.

I don't know if some of the many guests from the record will attend, but will post if I hear.

This cd is abouletly stunning - diverse, inventive, driving, melodic and infused with mandolin playing that is out of this world. Personally, I've always considered Andy to be the No 1 mandolinist, and this masterpiece confirms it for me. Genius!
