San Francisco Festival of Mandolins
The San Francisco Festival of Mandolins will be held April 17, 2005, in the Croatian American Cultural Center, 60 Onondaga Avenue, San Francisco, California, from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.
The concert at 3:00 p.m. features Wake the Dead, Joe Craven, Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, Zighi Baci and The Instant Klezmer Mandolin Orchestra.
In its fifth year, the Festival is expanding to include the cutting edge of mandolin music available in California. The program includes Wake the Dead, an ensemble that reinterprets the songs of the Grateful Dead by employing Celtic music traditions and instruments, including the mandolin, Aurora, the Bay Area's oldest and largest mandolin orchestra; Zighi Baci, a four-member group that performs traditional Italian Dance Hall style music and mandolin master and percussionist Joe Craven from the David Grisman Band.
Doors open at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to play in a BYO Mandolin Orchestra at noon. There will be workshops by the performers from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. The Concert is at 3 p.m. Ethnic food and drink will be served from 1:00 p.m. $15 admission, ($2 off with mandolin in hand). Children free. Jamming is encouraged.
