The Steam Powered Hour - host of New York City's 2nd Annual Battle of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Bands

The Steam Powered Hour - host of New York City's 2nd Annual Battle of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Bands

New York, N.Y. — The Steam Powered Hour will host their second annual Battle of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Bands on February 19, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. at Theatre 80 St. Marks in Manhattan's East Village.

Twelve top bluegrass bands from New York and beyond will fight it out for the chance to perform at the 2011 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, California, held September 30 - October 2.

Select members of the music industry will be on hand to decide the winner. To date, confirmed judges include Dawn Holliday of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and Norm Parenteau of Slipshod Management, who represents one of the biggest acts in Americana music, Old Crow Medicine Show.

In addition to the bands, a whole gaggle of New Yorker Magazine cartoonists will be on stage providing comic interludes. Like last year (with winner Citigrass), this is a show you don't want to miss.

The list of competing bands will be posted on the Steam Powered Hour web site on January 21. Bands interested in being considered as a participant should visit the Steam Powered Hour web site for details on entering.

"TO QUALIFY: To be in the realm of "bluegrassy," you must have either a banjo or a fiddle (no violins)."

Here's a direct link to the rules: http://steampoweredhour.com/battlerules

Mandolins are, of course, welcome - as are violins disguised as fiddles!

Hope to see you there!

Just a heads up to those whithin striking range of NYC -- The Steam Powered Hour is a great monthly show, normally based in Brooklyn. Host, NYer cartoonist Mathew Difee is a mad genius. Find them on FB, or elsewhere on the interweb. Plan your next vacation around one of these oddly endearing shows. Yes!
