Zero fret - highlighted in red
A zero fret is a fret on which the string rests near the headstock before attaching to a tuner. On many mandolins, this function is handled by the nut.
On a zero fret instrument a nut is present but instead of a resting place for the string, its main purpose is to provide the appropriate string spacing.
Depending again upon the builder's choice, there may or may not be a space between the zero fret and the nut. Zero frets are common on classical and Selmer styled instruments to name a few.
