Lacquer is a finish material consisting of a dissolved solid in a volatile liquid. Drying takes place through evaporation of the liquid, leaving the solid behind in a layer. For musical instrument work the common type is nitrocellulose lacquer, consisting of nitrocellulose dissolved in thinners and reducers.
