Gibson and at least a few select other builders (Calace) dabbled briefly in the lyre mandolin shape shown here.

Some of Gibson's earliest instruments contained a label that showed Orville Gibson's image superimposed over a lyre mandolin.

Not a great deal is known about these few instruments, but another Gibson lyre model was just uncovered at Gruhn Guitar in June, 2006.
