The mandocello is typically the equivalent in the mandolin family as the cello is to the violin family. It is tuned one octave below the mandola: C, G, D, A. There is an interesting form of 5-course mandocello designed for solo repertoire by the addition of a high "e" course; it is named liuto or liuto moderno.
