Default Julien Martineau - Calace's Preludes For Solo Mandolin

The Mandolin Cafe has posted the following news release:
Julien Martineau - Calace's Preludes For Solo Mandolin

French mandolinist Julien Martineau has released a project of Calace Preludes for solo mandolin, thought to be one of only two mandolinists to ever record this collection considered the mandolin's equivalent to Paganini's Caprices for Solo Violin.

Thanks, Larry. Was just getting to those. When I looked a few days ago they weren't there and assumed they wouldn't be.

Interesting interpretations; surprisingly different than Gertrud Troester's "Calace: 10 Preludes -- The Romantic Mandolin." If you enjoy Martineau's Calace CD, you will probably also find his other recently released work, "Quatour Ambrosius," something you would like. Thank you, Scott, for bringing this to our attention.

So, apparently it's only available as a download, not as a prerecorded disc? I'd like it, but I don't buy downloads.

You apparantly really have to like reverb.... so heavy that you can't even hear the individual notes in some cases..... ok if you are in a cavernous church, but I'm not thrilled about purchasing a recording to listen like I am 200 feet away in an echo chamber....

Thank you for your interest for my recording.
The CD is available on www.museclassique.fr with a 20 pages booklet. The texts are by Jérôme Rossi (musicologist, lecturer at Nantes University), Raffaele Calace Jr (mandolin maker, grandson of Raffaele Calace) and myself.
I recorded in Eglise du Carla, a XIIIth church in Castelnau-de-Lévis, where I played the Preludes in concert two weeks ago (picture below).
For the 150th anniversary of birth of Calace, I will play this program in Africa from october 15th to november 17th (Cap-Vert, Sénégal, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigéria, Ethiopie, Djibouti, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambie, Mozambique, Swaziland).
    All the best,
    Julien Martineau

Why is it billed as being for solo mandolin?

    Hi Julien,

I bought the download from Amazon. Do you have a link to download the booklet as well?

    Best, Larry

    Hi Larry,
Please could you send to me your e-mail address at contact@julienmartineau.com ? I will send to you a pdf version of the booklet because the label doesn't diffuse digital booklet.
    Best regards,
    Julien
PS : for Jaycat, a picture of Gran Preludio autograph that shows the Calace's writing for solo mandolin

That was my first impression from a quick listen online to the samples. The playing sounds impeccable but for me the microphone(s) are located a little too far from the player. I think I would want a little more intimacy with a solo performance. I will download it anyway and give is a good listen. An impressive undertaking and thank you so much, Julien!

The reverb is just too much, almost nauseating, and all tracks are a lot slower than Gertrud Troster's version, by over a minute per track. However there is another CD, with the Quatuor Ambrosius which sounds better. It's also released by the same label, in fact the only CDs released by that label, so I'm guessing it's a self created label?

Beautiful playing. I don't mind the church recording.

I could have sworn I heard accompaniment -- guitar? viola? harpsichord? I guess it's the reverb after all?

    Is the recording double tracked?

Beautiful tone and an interpretation which emphasizes these preludes and their polyphony!
A cd to listen to absolutely!
