Thanks for the responses, folks. I think I'll try one of those Planet Waves clicky things, once my MT arrives. Can't wait. Can't wait. Can't wait.
If anyone wants to post other pics of strap button installs, though... especially if you have a Collings MT, that would be great.

Of course it all depends on how you strike the fretboard and the length of your trunk in relation to the length if your arms. I'm sure there's a mathematical formula in there somewhere -- |

We have a unique design for "A" mandolin players> It incorporates an extra long loop that allows you to place your strap under the fretboard extension. It requires you to take off the strings first. Then you can put the loop over the headstock, slide it up the neck and then under the fretboard. Then you restring your instrument. No drilling is required, and no plastic 'quick release' parts are required. Currently I have only one color of these in stock, but any color we carry can be orderd and it usually only takes a couple of weeks to create your very own custom strap! Check out all our straps at www.lakotaleathers.com

Peter Mix installed a button on the side of the heel, just havent needed to add a strap ,
sitting around a table jam, only musical outlet anyway.. have on occasion run a cord looped from end button , hang another loop around a tuner shaft.

the 'eadstock, above the lowest set of tuners so it's out of the way. I tried the under the extension route, but I need access to as many frets as I can reach (since I paid for 'em all, by gum I'm gonna use 'em!).

The Rigel A and Newson came with strap buttons. The Rigel's was on the back and the Newson's was on the treble side of the heel. I added one to my Jarmin on the treble side of the neck near the heel.

This is what I've gone with since I got my Collings MT. I had a nylon shoelace that I tied to the strap I already had. Looks lame, but works perfectly.

For me, it is on the headstock. Instead of a thong, I loop my leather strap into one of those Rubber Bracelets, like the yellow one embossed with Butch Baldassari's name. I slip it over the headstock, between the tuners. It is flexible, doesn't mark the finish and can be slipped back over to remove the strap.
I also have my strap adjusted and eliminate the long loop that is formed in the leather strap by wrapping a piece of wire tight against the Bracelet (before that the thong). I go around twice with the wire, twist the ends together about ten times then fold the twisted section back and tuck it between the layers of leather. These methods work for me. My strap is cracked a bit and worn by about 9 years of use. |

Yet another reason to play Ovations. They have a second button on the upper bout, just where it needs to be.
