Default Best albums of 2009

Anyone want to start talking about their lists? I'm mostly done, but need about another week to digest a few more albums, but my list will be forthcoming

Does the Album need to be produced this year?

I'm almost certain a bit of CCR or the Dead will be near the top of many of my "Best Lists".

I'll agree with some already mentioned and add....

Levon Helm's - Electric Dirt
Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam - Roll Away
Derek Trucks - Already Free
North Mississippi All Stars - Do It Like We Used To

I'm sure there's more I'm just not thinking of, I'm not counting the re-issues or the Woodstock full show releases, Everyone seems to be digging up their own archive material. The more things change, the more they stay the same?

Winwood & Clapton's new disc of old music is great &
Hill Country Revue's "Make A Move" is a nice southern blues romp shuffle.

My tastes are all over the place...here's some of my favorites from this year. I'm sure I forgot something!

Top 5 CDs of 2009:

Amadou & Miriam - Welcome To Mali
Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Levon Helm - Electric Dirt
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

Best mandolin CDs (I haven't picked up Sam Bush's new one yet...so that's the only reason it's not on my list):

The Vignola Collective - Gypsy Grass
Matt Flinner Trio - Music Du Jour
Mike Marshall's Big Trio
Sarah Jarosz - Song Up In Her Head

Best 2009 jazz CD you've never heard:

Rocky Gresset (His Debut Solo CD, jazz, swing, gypsy jazz...member of Selmer 607)

Really cool music from 2009:

Sometymes Why - Your Heart Is A Glorious Machine
Wilco - The Album
Oumou Sangare - Seya
The Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Bat For Lashes - Two Suns
Florence And The Machine - Lungs
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Modest Mouse - No One's First & You're Last
Bela Fleck - Throw Down Your Heart
Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer
Crystal Method - Divided By Night
Dinosaur Jr - Farm
Fiery Furnaces - I'm Going Away
Katzenjammer - Le Pop
Loudon Wainwright III - High Wide & Handsome (The Charlie Poole Project)
Neil Young - Archives Box Set
La Roux - La Roux
Spinal Tap - Back From The Dead
Steve Martin - The Crow
Fleck Hussain Meyer - The Melody of Rhythm Triple Concerto Music for Trio
The Waifs - Live from The Union of Soul
Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella!

Looking back I see now what a great mandolin year 2008 was...awesome releases by Chris Thile/Edgar Meyer, Punch Bros, Will Patton, and many others.

Larry,
Do you know who's playing mandolin on the Vignola Collective? Is it Matt Flinner or Josh Pinkham? Couldn't find the info on Vignola's website.

Thanks!

This is my top 30, as of right now. I don't think it's going to change a whole lot. It's nearly a tie at the top. I've never been too impressed with Metric's older stuff (and I'm still not), but I thought Fantasies was just amazing. It's not like they're reinventing the wheel, but it's (IMO) a flawless record of perfectly played, brash, sexy, honest, energetic, new-wave inspired rockers that in general are often insidiously catchy. The Low Anthem record is just phenomenal in the way it creatively mines some somewhat familiar influences on the way to crafting a sublimely beautiful album that is a feast for the ears on headphones.

1. Metric; Fantasies
2. The Low Anthem; Oh My God Charlie Darwin
3. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart; s/t
4. Japandroids; Post-Nothing
5. Built To Spill; There Is No Enemy
6. Dinosaur Jr.; Far
7. Big Pink; A History of Love
8. Sonic Youth; The Eternal
9. Yo La Tengo; Popular Music
10. Phoenix; Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
11. The XX; XX
12. Camera Obscura; My Maudlin Career
13. Yeah Yeah Yeahs; It’s Blitz
14. Drive-By Truckers; The Fine Print
15. Ryan Bingham; Roadhouse Sun
16. Various Artists; Chris Gaffney Tribute: The Man of Somebody’s Dreams
17. Levon Helm; Electric Dirt
18. Axton Kincaid; Silver Dollars
19. Handsome Furs; Face Control
20. The Smith Westerns; The Smith Westerns
21. Wilco; Wilco (The Album)
22. Magnapop; Chase Park
23. Manic Street Preachers; Journal For Plague Lovers
24. We Were Promised Jetpacks; These Four Walls
25. Boston Spaceships, Planets Are Blasted
26. Lightning Dust; Infinite Light
27. St. Vincent; Actor
28. Doves; Kingdon of Rust
29. Morissey; Years of Refusal
30. Fever Ray; s/t
