With the current upswing of The Beatles in the media... wonder if there's an interest here for starting a Beatles Music Social Group... place for posting mandolin tab, videos, mp3's, resources, etc.

Seems the Beatles might be ripe pickings for some jazzy mandolin chord melody arrangements. Anybody got any?
I was thinking of attemtping to work up something like "In my Life" one of these days.

Social Group established. I made an icon too. I don't really wanna moderate it so someone step forward and I'll see if Scott can make a switcheroo.

Eleanor Rigby is very easy. It has 3 repeating phrases with a change on the 4th pass of the 2nd phrase and an then an ending. I have it Tabledited out for practice this way. Tell me how and if anyone wants it posted.

Dave, You can add the TablEdit by using the Go Advanced button then when composing your reply click the paper clip icon in the header. This will open a window to allow you to attach several files, one at a time. Press Browse and find the file on your computer then click upload. When that is complete X out of the pop up window and when you Post your reply the TablEdit file will be there.

This is the above referenced Tabledit file. It is the same version as on mandozine. The phrase are at the top .The song follows.
I am not sure about the play order in tabledit. I changed it as I was practicing different areas of the song. Let me know if anything is needed or incorrect. Dave |

Hi Everyone! Beatles is my specialty, on guitar. However I am working on a Christmas show involving Happy Xmas / War is Over by John Lennon. I believe I can hear an octave mandolin fast-picking single notes throughout the song. Anyone else hear what I think I hear? It sounds too low for a regular mandolin.
I hope to add some tabs soon for Beatles' mandolin parts. I have not yet tabbed Lucy In The Sky, but that is somewhat easy to play on mando. Laura |

"Cry Baby Cry" isn't as difficult as it seems and it sounds really creepy on mandolin and acoustic guitar.

I did this arrangement of Michelle some time back. There is a book called "Finger Picking The Beatles" that I used as a foundation for the arrangement. I would be game to work on some more!
I bought the "Stereo" box set and it sounds incredible!! Last edited by Ken Olmstead; 10-11-2009 at 11:38 AM. |

There are at least four volumes of Beatles 'n' Choro CDs (kind of a Pickin' On type series). The cool part is all the great players involved - Hamilton de Holanda and Henrique Cazes play bandolim and cavaquinho, for example. Some tunes are more successful than others, but there are plenty of interesting arrangements. My favorite is the Choro version of "The Inner Light" - nothing like a Brazilian interpretation of an Englishman doing Indian music!

Ken beat me to posting his Michelle, but another of my favorite Beatles on mandolin YouTubes is Geoff Burghardt's version of Golden Slumbers.

Anyone hear that great version of "Because" that Grisman does with the David Grisman Quintet? I've been working on it this week to try and play with my band, it's really great. I have it pretty much down and I'd be happy to post it. Are there any programs that make writing out tabs easier then just typing out lines and numbers in word documents? I don't know, I've never tabbed anything out before.

Grist for the mill:
Check out Brian Hebert's CD of Beatle songs played as Celtic-style instrumentals on octave mandolin, "Any Time At All" (which also has John McGann as one of the sidemen). Evan Marshall played some Beatle songs on his two Rounder CDs of mandolin solos (in his trademark make-one-mando-sound-like-two style); "The Lone Arranger" includes "P.S. I Love You" and "Here, There and Everywhere," while "Mandolin Magic" has "Do You Want To Know a Secret," "Mother Nature's Son," "Michelle," and "You Won't See Me." There are three Beatle numbers on the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble's "Bach, Beatles, Bluegrass" CD.
