A guess from my mando-tasting limited ears:
1 Eastman 2 Mowry 3 Gibson The 3rd just sounds more tight and focused than the other 2 to me. I tend to associate that with f hole mandolins. The 2nd is a great open sounding mandolin with overtones. The first sounds open as well, just not as many overtones to me. I'll wager that I am more than likely dead wrong, but what a fun thread! |

Gibson - Only one that could NOT be an oval hole, IOW, not tubby.
Mowry - tubby, like an oval hole. Eastman - has the oval hole tubbiness, but not as much as #2.

This is what I originally thought, (yeah, I know, but it's true) but the post from Sean at Eastman made me change my mind. He was adamant that #1 is NOT the Eastman. It still does not sound like an oval hole to me.

Hmm.
I'm guessing #1 is Eastman, #2 is the Mowry and #3 is the Gibson. Oh hey look I happened to have guessed right! What refined ears I have!

There were other Eastman's on the rack, but I just picked the first one I saw. I played a nice F hole that played easily...and did sound hands down better than the gibson, which surprised me...you know Gibson is pretty good and giving people the idea that there are no better instruments.

I don't know about the instruments, but the tune is "The Battle of Evermore". Do I get a consolation prize?

Can you name the two tunes on the other clip? The last one is easy, the reel is from the land of the Celts, and not well known.

I am shocked, I have never heard one of our ovals sound anything like that #1 clip.

Well...it doesn't really make that much of a difference, I mean a few folks thought #1 was an instrument that cost 2 to 2.5 more than the Eastman was selling for. I think a good point has been proven here. Or has it?

Also your introductory post led me to make inferences about which was which that had less to do with the sound files - it was really what you said in that post that led me to believe the Mowry was #2, and not my ears so much.

Actually, I am more impressed by how many people identified them correctly.

Ryan I thought it was fun. But honestly we have a lot of threads about how a great sounding instrument is subjective and the tonal & projection differences of oval hole and f hole flat and carved top and back etc. etc.. These impressions we get from live acoustic sound can rarely be experienced with reproductions of the original. The recreated pressure wave is only a weak resemblance of the original and can't be expected to give all the audio/tactile clues needed. No, I'm not an expert, and have no idea of what I'm talking about but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
