I'm the buyer on this oddball f-style in desparate need of repair. Anyone recognize this thing? I figure the odd scroll ought to be a giveaway.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=320355021219 I have been temporarily "mando-less" since my last band broke up and I sold my Kentucky, so I figured any port in a storm and decided to give this thing a try. But it would sure be nice to have some idea of what it is. I thought perhaps someone in the group may have spotted it on eBay. Haven't received it yet.... |

Well, $115 won't break you, but you need to get that neck repaired ASAP; quite a crack at the heel in the pic you didn't post.
No label at all? Looks like someone's Gibson copy to me, from the "flowerpot" on the headstock; might be homemade. Is it solid wood? That scroll's pretty ungraceful, but still, for $100 or so, how wrong can you go...?

I recognize it as an inexpensive pacrim mandolin that was around a few years back (not that many). There are a few shots of these somewhere under the "worst scroll" headings. You're probably in that thing more than it's going to be worth.
For the life of me I can't find the thread with these in it. |

Hey, quit giggling at my scroll! You're gonna make me self-concious.
Yup, gotta fix the neck fast and cheap. This mando may go straight from the "what is it" forum to the "beater" forum. All repair labor is mine, so the buck(s) stop here. I have seen the scroll before too. May be Asian. Thanks to everyone so far! |

Your right Mike this mandolin has been seen before. And I believe it was part of a "what's the ugliest mandolin scroll you every seen?" thread.
Sorry Shmockie don't mean to insult your new mando! LOL! But this puppy is like a Pug puppy dog ... so ugly it is cute! Hey for a $115 bucks what the heck right. Also if I am not mistaken this was someone's early attempt at making a mandolin not a Pac-Rim factory model if I remember right, but I could be wrong. But on a serious note getting that heel crack fixed if probably going to cost you more than what you paid for it but look at it this way ... it'll be a good conversation starter at the jam. If someone asks you what is it tell'em it's a Henway and when they ask ... "What's a Henway??" Just tell'em .."oh about 3 or 4 pounds!"

That scroll makes me think of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". I'm going to have to watch it to figure out why.

It is really not even fair to refer to it as a scroll. It is more of a cresting wave (think Rickenbacker guitars).

If you are going to need serious neck repair, how about converting it to a two-point? Shouldn't be very hard to do.

If I remember right these mandos were marketed under the name Galveston.

Galveston, huh? That's not much to look forward to. Still waiting for it to arrive.....
Thanks again to all who have responded with info. I'll update when it show up - maybe a couple more photos, and a more detailed description. |

They were marketed under several names and some didn't have labels at all.

Wasn't any 35-40 years ago, either.

No offense Schmockiebaby but that is a pretty anemic looking scroll...kind of creepy...reminds me something I saw in "Nightmare Before Christmas" or "Beetlejuice" can't recall which.

I think it looks kinda cool like rolling up in a Edsel!
![]() I'd love to walk in and see the look on sgarrity's and Bucket's face at our local jam with this baby! Here's a picture of a Galvaston, they have weird looking scrolls and similar in design to this one but I still don't think this one is a Gavaston. I think this one was built at the beginning on some lutheir's career. http://cgi.ebay.com/GALVESTON-F-BODY...ayphotohosting |

Here's a Galveston with a very similar "cresting wave" scroll. Store was selling it new for $169. With a major fracture at the heel, $115 seems a bit steep...

Nah, look at both pictures. It's not the same mando. I've seen the Galveston's before, but that's not the same scroll. Even the Galveston may have a more advanced scroll than this little beast does!
By the way, Allen, can you post at least one more reply telling my I paid too much for it, please? I don't get enough of that from my wife. And don't forget to remind me about the neck crack again while you're at it. Thanks! Still waiting for it to arrive. Should be interesting..... |
