I play different instruments in different groups or used to....I play my mandocello in the Dayton Mandolin Orchestra and the (named right now)Odyssey Mandolin Quartet. I play both my tamburas in the group Hajde. I majored in double bass in college and still play it occassionally for gigs, so it's not going anywhere. I play my recorders and viole de gambe at Mideast Recorder Workshop each summer in Pittsburgh and we're starting an ARS chapter here in the Dayton area.....you've got the idea.
Now, I have to find groups for a bajo sexto, cuartro, 2 ukeleles, 3 tamburitza, soprano and bass domra, balalaika, Martin guitar, 3 violins, 2 Greek bouzoukis..... My name is Yvonne and I have a problem with MAS. I do own a mandolin and mandola, but as the member of a mandolin orchestra, I don't see any problem with those! HA!

I have 9 mandolins and I just play which ever one I feel like playing really but my main gigging instrument is my Gibson Fern. If I enter a contest or perform I am using that one.
But I have taken my old Gibson oval hole to Irish jams and Old Time Jams and just recently I took my Bulldog 2 point on the road because I had my Fern being refretted. And I have been know to whip out my banjolin or resonator mandolin at a party or two. Having multiple mandolin or in my case mostly different types of mandolins just gives you the freedom to play around. Now I don't have a bowl back or a mandocaster .... YET!

Deciding on what instrument to play depends on what music I want to play. If I am playing classical guitar, I prefer a guitar with a wide neck, and sustain. When I flatpick a guitar, I prefer to play a Martin with a small neck. I have new instruments which I have tested out, and some of them do not measure up to some of the old instruments I have. If I was going to play a beautiful waltz, I would want to play it on a mandolin that was able to produce the best sound, and I do not own one of those, although I would love to be able to afford one someday. Deciding on what type of music I want to play is the tough part for me, because I like so many different types of music.
