It's a "wild one" for sure. Its a single piece of carved maple from bottom to top of the headstock...soild as a rock but not very thick. There was a hole drilled all the way through and a "channel" running down the back that were filled with wood putty when I got it. No output jack but a volume pot and more putty in the hole!

Should be finished tonight or tomorrow. More to come...but its going to be a stage worthy player!!

Except I think Carvin actually put pickups in their emandos.

Clem -- was there a pickup hidden under the pick guard in that top one? (I saw that on a modified mandocaster once.)

No there was never any pickup on this at all. But there is a custom wound, copper clad tone machine on there now...

I don't know about you guys, but surely an electric resophonic mandocello is what's been missing in my life up to this point.

This is one of those horrible Chinese-made instrument-shaped objects, but it's the first one that actually appeals to me. Nut and bridge need to be reslotted, and it looks like the action is pretty high. I wonder what it would take to make it a playable instrument? Probably not worth it if it needs a neck reset -- but if it doesn't, the other repairs aren't too expensive.

Don't do it! That's the same outfit that photoshops pix of famous harp guitars from harpguitars.net and makes really poor chinese knockoffs to pawn off on ebay. While I admit I actually thought the electric Fareed Hacque-style mandocello was intriguing, they need to dry up and go away, IMO.

    More here.

Interesting. Look at the tailpiece! And the strings are equidistantly spaced. The strings look really high. Is it perhaps set up for use flat? If you wanted to use it as a mandocello, it could be done. Not much work. One might ask if there's enough string pressure to drive the cone. Ideally you should replace the cone with something decent. An eight string dobro would be interesting. It would let you devote a couple strings to different tunings, say one for easy minors and another for easy 7ths.

Is it just me, or does this thing look like it's a miniature instrument? I'd say the "shallow depth-of-field" effect isn't really a great choice for ebay photos...

Ya I saw that thing, but it looks really sketchy. Look at the string spacing. It doesn't look like a 8 string in pairs of 4. It looks like 8 individual strings.

It's meant to be an 8 string dobro (played lap style). 8 single strings (and more!) are common in steel guitars.

    But again... Beware Instant Karma.

I see it too, now that you mention it. It's also interesting that it's setup like a Tele, but the color choice makes it feel like a Strat to me.

Eeeeeeeewww. Here is a seller offering the body of a 1960s Mandocaster -- just the stripped-down body -- and then offering the case, tuners, neckplate, bridge, and bridge cover in separate auctions.

And I thought eBay didn't allow people to sell body parts.

Let me get this straight: Spend $2,800 with this seller and get a '60s Mandocaster in pieces, minus the neck, pickup, wiring, pots/knobs/jack, and pickguard. That's more than you should spend for a '60s Mandocaster that's fully assembled!

Maybe this isn't against the rules, but it's still wrong.

I agree. Don't do it. I didn't have enough instruments one day, so I bought a double-neck 8-string mando and 7-string guitar from this guy. Hey, every house should have one, right? I knew it probably would take some messing around to get it even semi-playable, but couldn't do it. As a conversation piece, however, it was worth the $150, I guess. The laughs alone are worth twice the price ... Yes, there IS one born every minute.

Yeah and maybe a little longer description too.

The sound clips are a good idea however.

Seller who was parting out a '64 Mandocaster a few days ago is now offering the whole enchilada. Neck plate number on this auction matches the neck plate he was selling by itself earlier.

    Weird, man.

Here it is held by the seller, so assuming he is of normal stature, I guess it was just an optical illusion.

Looks sort of like a hybrid Tele-Strat style body with Tele bridge & pickup config, plus a Carvin mandolin neck -- but I am mightily intrigued by it nevertheless.

Looks like you can get the doubleneck in butterscotch or blue as well, with the former going for $100 less than the blue or red...
