Chad at Greg Boyd's sent me this. Said these guys showed up at their booth last year and were pretty good players. Guess I'll hang around a little closer this year.

Looks like a couple of off duty Santas in plaid!

If that is pretty good, then I think I'll take two weeks off and quit because I doubt that I'll ever get to pretty good by that definition.

Somebody should tell that guy on the right that his curly-Q is missing. I bet he doesn't know much about mandolins, poor guy.

Those shots must be two years ago, as neither of those Santas were on the bill last year.
Coupla years back at Wgrass Thile was in the vendor area......I sat 'bout 2 feet away, best seat I've had yet for Chris.

Go straight to your room, Kevin. I wonder if these two belong to the United Brotherhood of Santa Impersonators Union.

This strand is so funny. If I saw them both show up at a booth I was sitting at it would turn me back into a kid again, too...

    Hi Everybody,

It was very nice to think back on WinterGrass festivals gone by - especially THAT one, with David Grisman and Doyle Lawson twinning mandolins at our booth.

It was very funny the way the events unfolded that day. By the way... it was 2002, actually, instead of 2003...

Earlier in the festival, Jaroslav Prucha had gone to talk with David Grisman AND Doyle Lawson separately, inviting them to come by our booth to look at his mandolins.

Jaroslav was inviting them to give unabashed critique of construction and tonal characteristics of his mandolins, from their experienced "player's" standpoint.

It was actually by chance that they both showed up at the same time at our booth. We enjoyed each of them encouraging Mr Prucha with comments on the tonal aspects of the mandolin, such as discussing in depth the finer points of the placement and depth of the recurve "throat" of a top's carve, the arching of tops and backs, neck angles, etc.

Before long they were playing a little... then naturally fell into some harmonic lines, then straightaway were playing song after song, twinning the parts. Beautiful! Such great spontaneous and lyrical music.

We all seemed lucky that day... But I am sure it was Mr Prucha who felt luckiest when David Grisman made an announcement after playing one of the Pruchas for awhile. He said, 'you can make a living playing this mandolin'...

Gotta go now - the Van and Trailer are loaded to the absolute gills with stacks of great instruments, Customs should be "pre-clearing" the new batch of Prucha instruments at Seattle airport...

    We are "off to WinterGrass"...

Great post Greg and thanks to you helping me find the perfect mandolin. I love my Prucha F even if I will never be good enough to make a living playing it. But because you are the best dealer in my eyes in this country you can make a living doing that.

    Best,

If that trailer becomes too much hassle I'll pull it on back home with me for nothing but the contents, another great deal from one of the folks at the world famous Mandolin Cafe!

BTW many thanks to Scott, Greg and Fred for the Calton case. Its better than I expected and exactly what I was looking for both in color and price and I appreciate the fact that everyone involved went a little futher than required to make my day!
