Default Art print: Donkey playing Mandolin

I went to a local community block party this weekend with music, a mini parade, and lots of tag sales and local stores, food vendors, and artists selling their wares.

Among them was an artist selling her prints which included animals playing various instruments, such as a goat playing guitar, bear playing banjo, a fox playing fiddle, and a donkey playing mandolin.

Here's a pic of the donkey print:

I have NFI, but picked up the donkey print, and thought I would share on a Sunday morning.

Wonderful for sharing Larry, and thanks goodness it was not called jack@$$ playing mandolin!

The fox one is really, really cool. The background reminds me of a certain Isis cover...

Very cool prints, though the suited animals are a bit creepy. All of her art is very cool, very folksy.

And the mandolin is "inspired" by Bill's Loar (broken headstock scroll). Pretty cool!!

Seems to have large hands for a donkey. But there's a lot about art that I don't understand.

For some odd reason, there is a theme going back in time of monkeys playing mandolins in primitive genre paintings. Here are just a few, prob dating back to the early part of the last century.

In that case, the donkey ought to have a banjo...

But then why are there still monkeys? I say we came from donkeys, aw man, there's still donkeys too.

    Ah maybe this the answer...

I wonder why the goat and the donkey have animal heads on human torso's and the fox and bear are full animals? Either way, I like the work.

The artist said (via FB) "Everyone in the thread has been awfully kind, please convey my grateful regards to them! I've got no musical aptitude myself; luthiers who make instruments both beautiful and functional astonish and humble me - so I wanted to be careful about accuracy, at least to avoid mistakes of ignorance as much as possible. For the time period I was interested in, Andy suggested I become acquainted with Mr. Loar and Mr. Monroe. Mr. Monroe's legendary F5 is a thing of beauty, with all its wear and patina and history. If I hewed too close to one iconic instrument, it was out of concern for introducing variations that didn't fit. ...And yeah, his (the donkey's) hands are big and he's a bit ungainly, he's an awkward country fella and sometimes his voice cracks too."

I wonder if the Donkey's name is "Simon Slick"? Oh wait, that was Johnson's old grey mule.

So you know how hard it is to do a chop chord with a hoof? At least a cow or a deer could do two finger chords, maybe. Fingers on a donkey just make sense here, right? (I love the painting as well)

Your friend should set up a cafepress shop. I for one would immediately purchase one of these on a t-shirt (and a probably a mug and...).

I wonder if that donkey thinks his mando is "woody" or "choppy" or "stringy" or "twangy."

Maybe the donkey is playing; "Whoa, Mule, Whoa" the bear is Playing; "Old Slewfoot" and the fox is playing: "Fox on the Run".

It seems the bear's banjo has no strings.

God knows i want to make an ass joke but i'm leaning on what little better nature i have left and resisting.

Donkey-folks in art have had a long evolution - my favorites being Goya's - i do like this print as well though - i know he is playing mandolin but, for some reason, i keep thinking of Charlie Poole.

Anyway, heres a link to the artist's blog... lots of great images there too
