Default Mandolin newbie looking for a good instructor to get me started..

New to the Mandolin scene, have played acoustic guitar for about 5 years, I'd gauge myself an advanced beginner/intermediate (on guitar). I'm looking for a teacher to get me started with a proper foundation. I want to learn in the piedmont blues/bluegrass, old timey genre ala Barry Mitterhoff of Hot Tuna.

Does anybody know anyone in the New York City area/Long Island? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

    Thanks,
    Mike

Call up Mandolin Bros. out on Staten Island (718) 981-8585
They should know of several possible instructors.

According to his Facebook page, Barry lives in Scotch Plains, NJ. His listing on the CMSA website indicates he teaches mandolin. Doesn't seem like it's too far from your area.

Do it online at Academyofbluegrass.com. Mike Marshall does a great job. There's a good beginner section and you can ask Mike all the questions you want. Plus you get to see what he tells evrybody else. He's big on posture and position.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I was also given the name "Don Julin", and that he does Skype lessons. Have any of you heard of him? I believe he's out of Michigan.

    Regards,

If you want to play like Barry M, call him. He's amazing. If you take a lesson from, let us know if he's a good teacher.

I reached out to Barry M., he responded, he's a really nice guy. He does teach beginners in NYC. I'm going to meet up with him in the beginning of September. I'll be sure to post a review.... I can't believe i'm going to be learning from the guy I want to emulate......! Very cool!!!
