    Default Devastating News: Seth Rosen

I am so sorry to inform the Café that one of our most proficient contributors, Seth Rosen, died yesterday evening, apparently the victim of drowning of the coast of North Carolina. I am only reporting what I've seen on Facebook, os I have no details. I do know that I spent a week at Augusta in 2005 with Seth, and it was one of the great musical experiences of my life. Sethro was a very fine player, but an exceptional teacher., incredibly generous, always supportive, and a thoughtful and considerate person in every way. No one ever lead a jam better than Seth, and the hours flew by when he was calling the swing tunes. I know he will be sorely missed by those that knew and loved him. I just want it to be known that I valued his suport and guidance immensely, and will miss him a great deal. RIP.

The Cleveland news reports that Seth Rosen, a Westlake, Ohio native and District 4 vice president of the Communications Workers of America, drowned Friday afternoon while vacationing with his wife in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. I post this because I am wondering if it is a different Seth Rosen who suffered this tragedy? In any case, whoever, condolences certainly.

I met Seth at Augusta many years ago- I was attending Blues Week and had a $65 pawn shop special mandolin, so thought I'd attend a slow swing jam. Seth demonstrated a diminished chord on the mandolin for me... I've been damaged goods ever since. R.I.P. and thank you!

I took a "mini-swing mandolin" class with Seth a couple of years ago at Augusta. Nice guy; really cared about people. A great loss for music and for those who knew him or benefitted from his caring.

Brad Weiss and I attended Sethro's mandolin class at Augusta Heritage Swing Week in 2005 and, like Brad, I consider it one of the great musical (and personal) experiences of my life. It was intense, extremely informative, and a boatload of fun. How he packed so much into one week of classes is hard to fathom, but he did. And no one I have ever picked with was so welcoming and encouraging. The faculty-student jams at Augusta that year were very open and friendly, and Seth was usually the leader, making sure everyone got a chance to solo and making everyone feel like an important part of the session. He was one of the most vibrant, generous, and funny people I ever met, and it's hard to believe he is gone.

This is so sad. I read the story posted above last week when it happened, and thought the name was familiar. Had no idea that he was part of the Cafe and the mando community until I put 2 and 2 together. That, and the fact that I was just on Ocracoke Island a month ago made it really hit home for me. Ocracoke Island has 12 miles of uninhabited beaches, and it is quite desolate at the northern end of the island where this tragedy evidently occurred. So sorry for his family. God Bless ya Seth

I also took one of Seth's Augusta workshops and got a lot out of it. I was impressed by his ability to fit into a variety of musical styles from Delta blues to rock to jazz. He will be missed.
