Thumbs up Camp Bluegrass 2012 -- Levelland, Texas

I'm burning up highway tomorrow headed for Levelland and Camp Bluegrass 2012, George Wilson riding shotgun. The focus of the camp this year is, of course, Bill Monroe's 100th birthday, and Joe Carr has lined up a fantastic bunch. Roland White, Jim Moratto, Robert Bowlin, Bill Evans, Jon Weisberger, Steve Smith, Tim May, and many more, all great.

This is my second year at Camp Bluegrass. Last year I took the mandolin course, but this year I'm in the vocal class with instructor Dede Weyland. I went to the vocal jams last year and was very impressed, so I signed up.

The classes are very informative and useful, but the real fun is jamming at night. I hardly slept last year's week at camp. Pickin' until the wee-est hours. I met folks there last year that I've kept up with, and I sure look forward to seeing them again this year.

PsychoMando, you gonna be there with your bad-a## Weber? Anyone else? I'll be wearing a Mandolin Cafe hat at the jams, so say hey.

Sounds like fun. I never saw this event promoted or listed, bummer. Have fun and don't work your pipes too hard.

It was listed in the "Full July" notice of camps and workshops, but I was surprised that no one had started a thread this year touting it. Lots of folks from nearby New Mexico there, and Steve Smith of the Hard Road Trio (whose excellent, new CD "Monticello" is featured on the Cafe's home page right now) is one of the instructors. I saw them at a house concert last month here in San Antonio, and their bassist, Anne Luna, said she was going, so I suspect that Chris Sanders will be there somewhere, too.

PJ, I bet it's not too late to register. Put it on plastic, and we'll see you tomorrow!

It's a blast. Don't forget Gerald Jones. He'll pick all night with you and help with anything you need help with. Steve Smith is a great mando instructor, too.

    Have a blast!
