    Default Django tunes on mandolin

    Hi Folks

I wonder if anyone can recommend any recordings of Django tunes performed with mandolin (of course!). Either single tracks or whole albums suggestions would be welcome. I have most of Grisman's catalogue so probably don't need any of his stuff.

To be honest anything in that style would be great - no matter whether a Django tune or not!

    Much appreciated for any help.

    Check out:
Back to Back by Tiny Moore and Jethro Burns
    Puritan Sessions by Jethro Burns
    Swing 220 by Don Stiernberg
Angel Eyes by Don Stiernberg and John Carlini
Acoustics by the Tony Rice Unit
Green Room by Hot Club Sandwich

This is what I can think of right now. You can't go wrong with anything by these guys. And I'm sure you have a lot of Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli which is the best even though there's no mandolin.

    Gerry,

I don't like to self promote but you might like a version of Django's Tiger I played on with Les Gendarmes du Swing. It's on the cafe mp3 page (this is the link for the file: http://www.mandolincafe.net/mp3/garywilliams.mp3).

    thanks,
    Gary

Also check out Harmonious Wail. They have a couple tunes on the Cafe MP3 page and you can also listen at their website www.wail.com
They are one of my favorite groups.

Will Patton does great Gypsy Jazz on mandolin. There's some stuff on the MP3 section here, including Rue des Rosiers.

    Thanks for some great suggestions.

Gary, if my playing was anywhere near like yours I'd probably think about a small bit of self promotion. Good stuff sir!

    Hi Gerry:

It's certainly interesting to see how mandolinists approach Django's music. But remember...just about everything Django played can transfer over to the mandolin. So, if you're interested in learning that style, why not go right to the source.

Good point Aaron. I have loads of Django recordings and other jazz but until recently probably under-rated my ability to play such music. As I'm a better mandolinist than a guitarist (believe me that doesn't say a lot for my mandolin playing!) i think that hearing that style played on mandolin would give me a better road map for starting to learn some stuff especially if I'm learning by ear. My chord knowledge/music theory is generally lacking and I plan to brush this up over the coming months. Perhaps then when I can get a grip on the chord changes I can start to better learn the melody by ear from any instrument with some basis for knowing what I'm playing.

I now have Ted Eschliman's book 'Getting Into Jazz Mandolin'. I'm on my second set of fingers already ;-)!

I checked out this album. That's some size of letterbox to get an old gramophone disc through it! Or was it shellac cylinder?
My wife cries if the fiddle is good and boy did she well up!

Although it's obviously dobro oriented, Billy Cardine's new release Six String Swing features Josh Pinkham on mandolin and doing a fine job.

My wife and I saw Harmonious Wail at a July 4th concert. Sims studied with Jethro Burns and studied at Berklee.

After hearing them, my wife ordered me my first mandolin.

    I recommend them.

I'm with Nicole on Swing 220 (which I'm listening to right now) and Back to Back. They are both very good albums. Another one I love, although not that much Django content, is Swing Low Sweet Mandolin by Jethro Burns. It's a great just mando and guitar album, with Don Stiernberg on rhythm guitar and Jethro playing all the leads. There's some genius stuff on there!
"All the fuss about learning music theory, and now we see that most teachers only teach you how to use one tenth of the elements on our list! Their music theory only teaches you how to use notes, and it's only a theory! That's it! Nothing else! It doesn't teach you about dynamics, feel, tone, or anything else on the list, only notes. It should be called note theory, not music theory, because it doesn't teach you Music!"~The Music Lesson, By: Victor Wooten

Great album!! That was a tasty version of "You Never Give Me Your Money". Love your playing, and the other players on there aren't slouches either. Glad to see you got to work with Mr. McGann before he passed.
