    Default Tg-50 tuners

Well, I have just got myself a Gibson TG-50, old one with the banjo type tuners. Has any one found a replacement tuner that will work without too much modification? I have one on the 1st string that has a tendency to slip back. Possibly a method of rebuild is possible ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If its the same as the TG-1 tuners usied in the 20s and 30s, you probably want these: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/B...ning_Pegs.html
Should be a straight swap but the gear ratio is higher so they should be easier to tune.

Thanks Jayyj, they would definately work but would require drilling out the headstock to the 3/8'. I wasn't really wanting to do this unless absolutely necessary. The tuners on my TG-50 are Grovers with two little flanges on the gear hub with two small scews into the back of the headstock. Perhaps some one has rebuilt these and could advise what material to use to replace the (fiber ?, rubber ?) washer in the clutch ? This is probably what is causing the slippage. If I eally tighten the screw on the knob it holds but I don't want to strip the screw threads or the srew head. Thanks again.

Can I suggest posting what you've just said on the Vintage Corner page at the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum? There are some amazing luthiers over there who would likely have the experience to advise how to repair the existing tuner.

I have several late 20's to mid 30's Martin and Gibson tenor guitars with the Grover banjo style tuners like you have on your TG-50. I found black fiber washers at an old school hardware store that fit and work great. The washers I bought are used for a plumbing application - perhaps a faucet washer or a gas fitting. Won't find them at Home Depot..... gotta find a real hardware store or plumbing supply store - hopefully with someone working there that knows something about hardware! With new washers those tuners should work great.

Those Planetary geared Banjo tuners are 4:1..
any more gear advantage and a worm gear tuner at a right
angle will have to be retrofitted.. ..
at 12:1 the tuning is a bit easier to get spot on.
