Default Not for the faint hearted - a sad end to Kimble A #136

Bad as it looks (and is), some good came of this weekend tragedy. Nobody got hurt, all involved are still friends, the 1940s Martin guitar and the Gibson Distressed MM didn't get hit, and I get to start the search for a new mandolin. It certainly is a bummer that such a nice instrument met such a grisly and untimely fate though.

I know the difference between accidents and stupids. This was an accident. It happened in a parking lot where it was run over this weekend at the BigHornMountainFestival. I understand there were several wakes held for it, some folks even started a replacement fund (which will probably be donated to the festival as the instrument will be covered) and we may have a memorial jam next year.

Weird as this might sound, I was actually relieved it was only my mandolin. When my friend approached me with this horrified look on her face and said she had some terrible news, I was instantly thinking of my wife and daughters, and bracing for the worst. It wasn't good, but it really is just a mandolin. My poor friend was devastated.

Looks like I'll be watching the Classifieds (I see a couple of Kimble's are there now).Click image for larger version.

    Oh, that's tragic.

Builder's warranties are nice, but I'll wager most of them wouldn't cover this. Friends, this is Exhibit A for Why You Should Purchase Instrument Insurance.

Warranty aside, it could be a challenging restoration project for Will...

That is horrible, Bill. I'm glad all the people (and the vintage Martin) were safe, though, and I applaud your great attitude toward the situation.

Definitely makes one think about instrument insurance.

Wow! Glad nobody was hurt - you are right, it is just a mandolin and we can make more.

That right there is some pretty funny stuff! You must have me confused... LOL!

I feel sorry for Bill and his mandolin, and I especially feel sorry for whomever ran over the mandolin, but for some reason I have been sitting here giggling ever since I saw the pics.

Knowing that the instrument will be covered makes it easier to laugh.

You are so right - knowing that the instrument is covered makes a big difference. Would be very sad to lose your main axe this way.

Might be a few parts that can be recycled - tuners, bridge, tailpiece? I am glad he didn't take any photos that reveal my top secret internal construction...

I think I'd have to put the headstock in a shadowbox on the wall as a memorial. Maybe use part of the top/back for the frame somehow?

    That'll buff right out!

Can't help but wonder if it would have stood a better chance in a good hard shell case, i.e., Peg, Calton, Hoffee?

Glad all humans were okay, but sorry for your loss.

That one really opened up nicely!!

It's awesome that you can have a sense of humor about it. And this is exactly why I have instrument insurance and use Caltons for everything. They are complete overkill 99.9% of the time. But worth their weight in gold that other .1% (PS -- Pure speculation whether a Calton or similar would have prevented this.)

Good luck on your hunt and I know a good place to start.....

Looks like vehicle tire directed by the unknowing trumps fireplace poker wielded by woman done wrong. ;-)

(BTW, this would be WAY to tragic to post about had Bill not had insurance. Well done Bill! I hope your replacement is even better than this one).

Shaun, let's try this experiment. You place any one of your mandos in your Calton, and I'll run over it with my truck...

On a more serious note, sorry about your loss Bill. Glad you had insurance and could put it into perspective.
