I buy bulk loop end strings from JustStrings.com. They are sold in dozens and are packed straight in long plastic resealable bags.

If you're in a hurry to make up a set, you can always buy a ball-ended guitar string of the appropriate gauge and pop out the 'ball'. You are at the mercy of the particular outlet as to what brand of strings they stock - most retailers would only stock individual strings in one brand.

juststrings.com, linked to above, only appear to do bulk deals on their own brand, but they do sell single mandolin strings by a number of brands http://www.juststrings.com/mandolinf...lestrings.html

Amazon.com also sells individual strings both as single strings and bulk packs of a single gauge string:

    1 http://www.amazon.com/DAddario-J6201...andolin+string

    2 http://www.amazon.com/Dunlop-Mandoli...andolin+string

just search for the gauge and musical instrument ya want, for the E strings above I just searched ".010 mandolin string" and waded through a page of "did you mean" to find em

Also a neat thing to do is to mix phos and 80/20 in the pairs. I did that in a pinch and now end up making my sets like that to use.

I get mine from Strings and Beyond - sponsor here, but my relationship with them went back years before I joined here. Free shipping once you get past $35 on your order, easy enough to do. And once you are on their email list, you get notices of specials, some of which are really cool. Missed the one about a free tuner, but a couple months ago they had a holiday weekend special on all D'Addario strings, so I stocked up on E strings. You"re right - they break more often than all the other ones combined.

Also, take a look at http://www.emando.com - operated by a member, with sets (pre-set or customized) and single strings in a wide variety at reasonable rates.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller
