10 stars, I believe that he is channeling Mon and Ronnie's solo on In Despair is stunning!

I LOVE the Del McCoury Band. Ronnie is one of my all-time favorite mandolin players. He's taught me a lot about mandolin.

Agree with what's been said. If you could only afford one recording in the past year in the bluegrass genre this would be my recommendation. In the rush of 100th Monroe birthday anniversary albums put out, easily the class of the bunch.

I agree that this recording was probably the best Monroe tribute recording in 2011. What impressed me the most was how good Del's singing was on this project. He is like a timeless wonder!

Just as a side note..during all the monroe centennial celebration when everybody was putting out the tribute cd's..Audie Blaylock put out one called "Im goin back to old kentucky" and Ronnie McCoury does all the mando work...and the cd is awesome!

I ordered Del's CD yesterday & for good measure ordered Jason Carter's 'On The Move' CD as well.There's some terrific Fiddlin' goin on on that one & a great version of David Grier's title track,

Practiced along with some Del CDs last night. Don't mean to belabor the topic but, man, they are good. They put the "blues" in BG music better than anyone else I can think of. Just love Ronnie's playing. Not a lot of fancy or speedy licks. Simple but so tasteful. Although quite capable of really laying it down fast. And he gets such great tone from his mandolin. The whole package.
Del's singing is like no one else's, in a VERY good way. So unique, but so good.
On the other end of the spectrum are people like Adam Steffey and Sierra Hull. The epitome of flawless technique and taste. Just as good but in a very different way. So many great, great, players out there. And many of them are right here on this forum and many are unknowns at festivals and jams. I love this music.

I always keep an MP3 widget on the MP3 page and just added this project there. Listen to those first two tracks. Wow. That's some seriously spectacular traditional bluegrass. LOVE how Ronnie is channeling Monroe's mandolin there. That's just about as good as it gets.

It is amazing to me how much he sounds like Mike Compton on some cuts.

I get it, Pete. I thought that might be a regional company, but I guess not. I think of the musical Keller Williams every time I see one of their signs. He also has a couple of excellent CD's with flatpicker extrodinaire Larry Keel. I particularly like Grass.

I think I need to get both of the new Del CD's, as well as Pick.

I'm no bluegrass fan, not by a long shot, but I truly dig Del. I have a lot of his recordings and I think he transcends the genre. This is a very good disc.

I am so excited about having the Vinyl version of this record that I embarked on a major refurbishment of a classic great Sota turntable (incredible auction find) that was sitting on the shelf to upgrade from my pretty good (heavily modified) Thorens. Great bluegrass mandolin played on vinyl on a lovingly restored turntable through classic old tube electronics, what could be better....
Oh yeah- pickin' with friends. But it's close.

This is meant to be Monroe, Monroe, and more Monroe, no tricks, rearrangements, watering down, etc. Just power and more power. Very very few singers today can sing Brakeman's Blues and who else even attempts Close By? Ronnie is both inventive and respectful... the above-mentioned break to In Despair is one that would get Mon out of his grave to try to one-up!

You are right, I should have been clearer. What I meant to say is that in my view one doesn't have to like bluegrass (which I basically don't) to enjoy Del McCoury. I think his music is 'transcendent' in that regard.

Mick, I get your point. And in person it's even more so. Del is such a warm showman, with obvious joy in the music, he can warm up any venue. And it helps to have the tightest band in the business, standing up there looking so professional. What we see with McCoury is what we unfortunately didn't always see with Monroe -- a really tight band that has been together for a long time and plays off each other, not just off the leader. And Del's almost unerring taste in material gets the audience on his side... after Blackjack County Chain or Vincent Black Lightning they can deal with Willie Roy or Close By. (I just wish he hadn't done Nashville Cats...).

I've been a fan of Del Mc.since he began with Bill Monroe.There was no mistaking that voice. IMHO,he's just got better over the years. I missed actually meeting him in '92 in owensboro,but he's one of the people i'd love to sit & talk to.I certainly don't like some of the stuff he's done over the years,but the 'good stuff' far outweighs the other.I'm looking forward to pickin' along with the CD,
