My two great loves are traditional music and science fiction. I know, it doesn't make too much sense to any one else either, but Andy Griffith actually had a SF show about some junkmen who made a spaceship in their junkyard. Salvage 1. Check in out. I always remembered him for satisfying my great loves. RIP, Andy.

Loved Andy Griffith Show and all the great characters. Watched it every day when I was a kid since it was one of the afterschool shows. It was really nice to have a wholesome show even though I didn't know that then but it's more obvious as I get older. My favorite episodes always included the Dillards.

Mt. Airy, where Andy grew up is about 25 miles from where I live, he was well thought of around here, we do owe him a lot for bringing bluegrass in general to the for front, and just good clean TV, but did you know that after studying music, he first went to New York, to of all things...be an opera singer...I'm glad his acting turned out to be better, I would have missed Andy, Barney, and the Darlings

This has been a hard year here in North Carolina.

First Earl, then Doc, and now Andy.

The first time I heard "The House of the Rising Sun" was on Shouts The Blues And Old Timey Songs with Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry in 1959.

"No Time for Sergeants" is one of the funniest films ever.

Some of my earliest TV memories are of the Andy Griffith Show, some of the best television ever. Andy will be missed.

Jacob, that's a great avatar pic.

I always wanted to pick with Andy, just once. I've heard from a few people who knew him that he was truly a kind, good man. When I was growing up I watched reruns of The Andy Griffith show (it was my first exposure to bluegrass) which remains an important part of our American culture for future generations. RIP, Andy.

It makes me sad, but he had a great run and an impact on several generations.

I heard this last night during a concert featuring Noam Pikelny and friends, where the opening band (locals called String Finger) ended their last set with a tribute to Andy Griffith that started with the Mayberry theme song on fiddle and banjo. I had never been a big fan (I remember its first airing, not the reruns) since I was much more snobbish then (!) but there is no question he was a great talent, a fine musician and an icon of Americana. RIP Mr. Griffith.

    Hey Alex,

I agree 100%. That was certainly the first time I ever saw a mandolin (or bluegrass for that matter). I grew up in Wayne County, just outside of Goldsboro and a little town called Fremont. Where did you grow up? When we were kids, "Andy" was on channel 5 and 7 all the time. Great way and place to grow up!

Whoa, Nellie! I did not know until just minutes ago there are lyrics for The Andy Griffith Show Theme! There was a nice in memoriam piece on today's CBS Sunday Morning show (otherwise mostly reruns, including a feature on Brad Paisley, which included a clip from the video for "Waiting On A Woman," the scene in which Andy gives Brad some sage advice) and over the closing credits they played a snippet of a jazzy version of the theme with a female singer singing some words. A quick interweb search turned up this from Andy himself, complete with lyrics. Oh, and it's called "The Fishin' Hole." You'll see why.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

RIP Andy, I'm sure I saw all the shows several times. His production standard were much higher than others of the time and I really loved the episodes with the "Darlings". He had a good run and impacted alot of peoples lives in a positive way, can't do much better than that.

That was GREAT journeybear...I never realized there were any lyrics to the theme song either!
