there have been double neck combinations made occasionally over the years.

I have a Dean "mondo" that I had converted to a 9-string dola (that I have currently tuned as a short scale octave). Really a decent sounding but really nice playing instrument...spec'ly for the $
Hammertone and Vox make a short-scale instrument called the mandolin-guitar (12 strings, usually tuned CGCFAD).
Mike Campbell, David Lindley, and Buddy Miller are high-profile players of these.
Here's a video of one tuned DGGFAD

One of what, exactly? Double neck, per mandroid's response? Mandolin-sized 6-string mini-guitar? Gibson and others have made 'em; called an "M6", maybe.
While we can't be certain that you were not hallucinating, be assured that someone somewhere has built every permutation of strings, neck, and resonating body that you, or they, can imagine! http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/om23350.html

Could the OP be talking about a mandolinetto? It's a small guitar shaped instrument that is tuned and played like a mandolin.

Btw welcome to cafe and I love your handle, mahoganyfolk--I was particularly enjoying my bevvy of mahogany-bodied folk instruments just yesterday--particularly a cittern, and a sweet little folk harp with beautiful red bodies
There are:
1. Mandolins with guitar-shaped bodies -- Framus and Hofner built 'em in Germany, and a variety of manufacturers built "mandolinettos" in the US, most notably Howe-Orme;
2. Small electric instruments that are double-strung like mandolins -- Vox mando-guitar, with a mandolin-length scale and 12 strings, which was copied by Phantom; also the Jerry Jones "Shorty," Kona MandoBlaster (that's a five-string, I believe), and others;
3. Actual double-neck mandolin-guitar combinations -- Gibson made one, the ES-1235 "Double Mandolin," though the "mandolin" neck had six strings and was probably tuned like an octave guitar; there were others, like this Levin.
Any one of these could be your "guitar/mando." A bit more specificity would help...

Thanks, I have a mahogany martin guitar and LOVE it. I play just a little mandolin so I'm not that experienced and had no idea what I was looking at. The guy just walked by and it had the body of a mandolin but a long neck like a guitar! Thanks for all the information guys!
