Default For those accessing John McGann's web site

For those wishing to access John McGann's web site, about 10 days ago or thereabout I started noticing problems reported from link checking software I run daily on everything but the forum. Didn't pay too much attention until today because sites go up and down, have problems, etc. But now I know...

Whoever his host is, they've misconfigured their IIS web server (Microsoft... I hereby withhold personal judgement). Possible they may eventually notice and correct this most basic careless newbie error.

So, you type in www.johnmcgann.com or http://www.johnmcgann.com you get a Directory Listing Denied (ie., we ain't gonna show you no web site, pal!). Type in just johnmcgann.com (minus www, server name) and you can access.

Advice: there's a lot of interesting information on his site. Don't count on it being there when you want it. That's just a hunch. And please don't email me asking me to take over the site like a couple of you did. Not my place and the thought of contacting a grieving family with such a request is something I'm just not going to do.

I figure the website will go down when the next bill comes due. Won't it still be available through the web archives?

Archive.org's Wayback machine would have copies of it now. If you can find old copies now, it will be there in the future. It isn't guaranteed by any means. If there is something on that site that you want you might want to get it now.

Curiously, it says it was most recently updated 6/20/12. I thought perhaps a family member updated it with news of his passing, but I don't see it anywhere on the site.

tried with www and it seems to work fine for me...

interestingly, we have an FTP and a mailserver with the same domain name as our website... (FTP and mail are in-house, web is outside). If you FORGET to use www for the website when you're in the office, you won't get anywhere.

    And so it goes.

Its been going up and down like this for awhile though. Works sometimes, sometimes doesn't. That's what's odd. Don't count on it being there if it goes offline. The web archive typically doesn't retain everything, just the main pages and often it'll link to images and files

I ordered/bought one of the DVDs from the website on 9/22/2012. Used paypal for payment. Did not receive any confirmation of purchase from the website.Did receive confirmation from paypal that payment was made. Last night I emailed using the link on the website and got this response "This address has been closed." So, I guess I'm wondering about the status of my order. Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Don.

Here's the website I ordered from http://johnmcgann.com/books.html . Beginning to think that , I just don't know what to think. Seems to be no way of contacting anybody, but the website is obviously still collecting for the material. I just don't know. If I don't hear anything in a few days, guess I'll have to contact paypal.

    Hi Don,

Paypal just sends an email over to whatever email address they have on file to to inform people that they have a payment. The cash is transferred automatically to the person PayPal account. Since this is all done automatically, I would say that no one actually knows that you submitted an order (since John passed away at the beginning of the year).

I would suggest that you just contact PayPal to get a refund and try and order the DVD from somewhere else.

The site is now displaying a note that it has been officially retired, another way to say all the content is gone I'd think. Discovered this evening while running some site-wide link checking software.

I've posted relevant excerpts on the JazzMando site (even while John was around), and will continue to review snippets of his pedagogical treasure. If anyone wants to edit and order more of his materials, I'd be happy to include them. The Wayback is a nice service, but you do often lose images and relevant indexing and links. Anyone interested in pursuing this feel free to contact me offline.
