Welcome from far-off Scotland, Bear667! You have come to a great place for all things mandolin-related. Since you are new to instrumental music you could do well to go over to the social groups and have a look at the Newbies Group. lots of folk there who have just recently started and it is a very encouraging group.
Well welcome to the cafe Bear, and I hope you enjoy your mandolin, and you will meet a lot of folks on here willing to try to help you...just let them know what type music you are interested in,or any questions you might have and you'll find players of all leavels that will give you a hand, so have fun, and welcome to the wonderful world of mandolin...I've been wondering around in it for about 50 years now, and still able to learn...it's great...Norm
Welcome to the Cafe!
Tell us some about your goals, what you're playing and what kind of music you want to make.

Bear667,
I'm pretty fond of Allan Alexander's books with CD for those styles of music. You can hear the track and the music is presented in standard notation as well as tablature. The arrangments are approachable for beginners/novice players and you can always add your own embellisments.
I have 2 of the Rennaisance books as well as the Celtic and Christmas ones.

PS Most of the tracks on the CDs were recorded with a less expensive Kentucky KM150 mandolin.
