The Gourds. A cool band with great songwriting that you may not have heard of. Their music contains a healthy dose of mandolin content.

Thumbs up Re: I'm listening to the Steeldrivers way too much ! whats your f

Love the Steeldrivers. While I like Bluegrass, I'm not such a big fan of the traditional Bluegrass singing style. I much prefer to hear it with a more soulful, bluesy voice like this one. Plus theres no overtly religious lyrics - another thing that ticks me off with some traditional Bluegrass artists.

Loved the Steeldrivers 1st CD, not so crazy about the 2nd one. Big fan of the Gourds. We play a handful of their tunes. Audience likes the Gourds tunes but never heard of them, of course.

Very respectfully, be careful...forum rules and such. Just keep in mind, like it or not, gospel is an integral, inextricable, part of bluegrass. It's OK to like it or not and to believe as you want. But it's kind of like saying..."another thing that ticks me off with some traditional bluegrass artists is they sing about the mountains and love and stuff". All of the above topics, including gospel, are woven into the very fabric of bluegrass music. Although I do understand you prefer to avoid bluegrass songs where there is religious content. And that's all I'm going to say on the subject out of deference to forum rules.

I'll tell you what: how about we leave the policing of the forum up to the Moderators? You, or someone else, doesn't like what I've written? Fine, flag it up.

Respectfully...no policing here and no offense meant whatsoever. No hard feelings. Matter of fact, I listened to your music...good stuff. Nice writing, arranging, and playing. I like it. Really like the Dobro in "Saw Grass Swamp". Also like "Aviation,mp3". I can hear Ry's influence. Heck, it's all good. What did you record it on?

I now have a bunch of Gourds CD's. A really good CD (THEY ARE ALL GOOD) with great songwriting is Heavy Ornamentals. The song that got me turned onto The Gourds was El Paso which was presented on an Oxford American Music Issue CD. Also on that same CD was Southern Culture on the Skids; another personal fave. What a compilation it was:

    1. “Why You Been Gone So Long” – Johnny Darrell
    2. “Total Destruction to Your Mind” – Swamp Dogg
    3. “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” – The Del McCoury Band
    4. “La Chanson d’une Fille de Quinze Ans (Song of a Fifteen Year Old Girl)” – Ann Savoy and Linda Ronstadt
    5. “Swan Blues” – King Pleasure
    6. “Run on for a Long Time” – The Blind Boys of Alabama
    7. “Evelyn Is Not Real” – My Morning Jacket
    8. “Lake Charles Boogie” – Nellie Lutcher
    9. “Hot Rod” – The Collins Kids
    10. “No Headstone on My Grave” – Esther Phillips
    11. “El Paso” – The Gourds
    12. “Leaving Loachapoka” – Marshall Chapman
    13. “Grits Ain’t Groceries” – Little Milton
    14. “Killer Diller Blues” – Memphis Minnie
    15. “Miss Maybelle” – R.L. Burnside
    16. “God Moves on the Water” – Blind Willie Johnson
    17. “Niki Hoeky” – P.J. Proby
    18. “See That Coon in a Hickory Tree” – The Delmore Brothers
    19. “Leaning on You” – The Yo-Yo’s
    20. “You and Your Sister” – Chris Bell
    21. “Columbus Stockade Blues” – Willie Nelson
    22. “A Little Girl from Little Rock” – Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell
    23. “Goodnight Moon” – Will Kimbrough

Duff, you should really enjoy Cahalen & Eli. Their music is a nice amalgamation of proto-bluegrass brother duets, fiddle tunes, and Van Morrison-ish bluesiness. They write some really good original songs and put their spin on some choice covers and traditional tunes. I can't wait 'til they come back to my neck of the woods. They also have a new CD coming out, in August, I believe. Here's a link to their website and info about their kickstarter campaign for Our Lady Of The Tall Trees. NFI.

Perry, that looks like a great compilation!

I'll have to check out the Steeldrivers (cool band name), although overtly religious lyrics and traditional bluegrass singing styles don't bother me at all, though I did have to grow into them.

No problem. I'll also apologise for coming across as heavy-handed.

All of the music was recorded on my PC. Acoustic guitar is a Larrivee OM-05. The dobro is a POS squareneck tricone copy, made in China. Mandolin is an Eastman 815.

No apologies necessary at all. I read my post and it came across as kind of preachy, albeit unintentionally.
Very nice piece of writing and recording. What software were you using?
I've played an Eastman 815 and they're a darn nice mandolin. A buddy of mine was looking at one at The Podium. I played it and was very surprised at how good it sounded. I also played an Eastman OM model guitar and was blown away at how good a $1000 guitar can sound. And at the time I owned 5 different Collings guitars (down to 2 guitars and a mandolin now). I was very impressed by the Eastman gear. It's incredible to me how much bang for the buck you can get these days. You don't have to spend $4000 to get a great sounding instrument.
Anyway, you're obviously a talented guy. Keep up the great work.

Funny you should bring up the Steeldrivers. I often pick new songs to learn because the catch my fancy in iTunes rotation. (I just put the 400+ albums on random play.) My latest fancy is "Sticks That Made Thunder" by the Steeldrivers.

That's ironic as I am sitting here doing just that. I love going through my music collection and listening to things I didn't even know I had. Great way to discover new songs.

BTW - Sticks That Made Thunder is my favorite cut on the Steeldrivers first release. Really great imagery on that song.
