Is the Samick MF1 any good for it's price? Can get it for less than retail price; $200 that is.
Looks alright to me and as always setup would be key.

To make a ukulele sound good, you need lots of skill.
To make a banjo sound good, you need high skill.
To make a mandolin sound good, you're crazy.
I think Samick's low-end guitars can be quite good for the price, but their mandos are sort of an afterthought in their line and really hit-or-miss. Leaving aside common problems like uneven frets, I've seen a lot of faulty bridge and tailpiece problems (Samick would send you replacements but they're slow and it would be a hassle). You can probably get a better used instrument for $200 if you can bear to wait.
If you look carefully and don't mind waiting a little, you can probably find a used Loar 220 or solid top Kentucky for just a little more. If it has a few scratches on it, no big deal. A mint condition Samick MF-1 ain't gonna be a collector's item in fifty years, and you might never outgrow those other two models -- even if you eventually move up, those will always be fine mandolins for casual play.....or camping trips......
I was after an f-style mandolin as i already have an a-style.

Is this the one on eBay for $300?
Seems it it pickup only, but in Melbourne, not far from me. Let me know if you'd like me to pickup and arrange shipping to you.
Edit: looking at the fingerboard inlays, the eBay one is a more expensive MF2. My offer stands if you want me to check it out for you.

Hereby & forthwith, any instrument with an odd number of strings shall be considered broken. With regard to mix levels, usually the best approach is treating the mandolin the same as a cowbell.
Hey Al. You've been around long enough to have learned the mantra, so I won't go into it. You already know you're not buying much for 200 clams, especially in an F. But Samicks can make good beaters, it's cool to have an F just because they're neat, etc.
Samick is a try before you buy situation at best. I'm sure you don't have unrealistic expectations.

Thanks For the offer Ben, I really appreciate it but I probably won't go with that one. And yeah Tim I don't have unrealistic expectations but I have got an idea of 'samick quality'.
