Default Winter Choro - World Premiere by Jovino Santos Neto

Not strictly mando oriented, but related. While playing at the Choro 2012 Port Townsend Choro workshop with Dudu and others, Jovino Santos Neto debuted this world premiere of "Winter Choro". He said he wrote it while on sabbatical to Banff during the winter of 2011-12.

Since we have so many choro lovers here, I thought I'd add it to the mix of the other videos as we roll them out. It's a beautiful piece.

I'm sorry we only had one camera on this, and that they unfortunately set up the piano facing away from the audience. I wasn't at the sound check so did not have input on the positioning. We cannot easily put a camera elsewhere in this theater. I'll be sure to be there next time to make sure it's placed right(G).

I have the second half of the concert still in the queue to edit. Been too busy to finish it at the moment.

Very nice, Al. Thanks again for posting. I have been listening to some older recordings (Nazareth) of choro on piano and do enjoy listening to it. This is definitely more modern jazz influenced (a little Oscar Peterson-esque). Wonderful!

This man has fundamentally changed the way I think about harmony and about the piano. If I were not so smitten by the mandolin, I'd be trying to make up for lost years just to make myself ready to study with him somehow. I love his style and spirit, the length and depth of his musical statements, and the amazing responsiveness he brings to the duet. His album "Veja O Som" is incredibly powerful, one of my very favorites - including the phenomenal romp through "Santa Morena" with Mike Marshall and a gorgeous "Gloria" with Danilo Brito - and between it and his quintet CD "Current" our living room walls have absorbed a whole lot of Jovino-waves. For a person I have never met, he sure has had an impact! Thank you for capturing this and posting it, Al.

Thanks Amy. You are second person who said words to that effect to me. My limited music theory knowledge allows me to miss these subtleties. But I agree, Jovino is an amazing player and composer. he's been a great addition to the workshop.

Jim, you might be hearing Jovino's influence from Hermeto P, whom he spent over ten years playing with.
