Default Wood block size for carving a mandola back?

What size wood block would I need to carve an H5-style mandola back? I know a wood worker who has offered to set aside some absolutely beautiful curly maple for me and I need the dimensions for the size of the board I'll need.

    Thanks a million!

    Howdy Matt,

From the Siminoff plans, I get 11"W by 15.5" to end of scroll(15" to end of button) by 3/4" thick at the arch. Those are net measurements, so you'll want to start with something bigger.

    best of luck, benny

    Thank you very much, Benny. I'll see if I can get a 12" x 17" x 1" slab.
